Afternoon: Participants arrive at IslandWood ( This site may be offline. ) and check in to accommodations. Note that rooms are not available until 4:00 pm—please feel free to bring luggage to the learning center as needed.

4:30 - 6:00 pm Engagement - Participation in an InTeGrate activity and analyzing it

6:00 - 7:00 pm Dinner in dining hall (family style)

Thursday, August 2nd

8:30 – 8:45 am Introduction to the day

8:45 - 10:00 am Content area working groups: Discuss findings from exploring modules and begin to work on practices web

10:00 - 10:15 am Report out from working groups

  • What have you decided to focus on within your topic area?
  • What activities are there that you can use?
  • What additional activities/strategies do you need?

10:15 - 10:30 am Break

10:30 - 11:30 am Content area working groups: Continue working on practices web and adding cross-cutting concepts

11:30 - 11:45 am Report out from content area working groups

11:45 am - 12:00 pm Begin personal action plan: How will these materials fit into your teaching?

12:00 - 1:00 pm Lunch in dining hall (family style)

1:00 - 1:30 pm Group discussion: Sustainability and place and adding local examples

  • Plan for completing work

  • Finalize practice webs with list of activities and cross-cutting concepts
  • Prepare for review by others

Drawing systems diagrams

  • Unit 1: Introduction to Systems of Systems Thinking module introduces vocabulary and a basic systems diagram using a bathtub and a news story about fires in Minnesota
  • Unit 2: Picturing complexity describes how to draw a systems diagram and label more complex systems diagrams with quantities (fluxes and volumes)

10:15 - 11:00 am Review

  • Climate and Biosphere review each others' workspace pages
  • Water and Oceans & Coasts review each others' pages
  • 10:15 - 10:40: exploration
  • 10:40 - 10:50: explanation from 1st group
  • 10:50 - 11:00: explanation from 2nd group
