Workshop Details
The workshop will begin on Wednesday, April 10th, at 4:30pm at the University of Illinois at Chicago Student Center East, and will conclude on Friday, April 12th at 3pm. If you cannot arrive on Wednesday in time for the 5:00pm opening session, please plan to travel on Tuesday and indicate that on your travel information form.
Participants are responsible for their own travel and lodging. Travel stipends are available on an application basis to help defray travel expenses in cases of financial need.
Travel
Participants are responsible for their travel to and from the workshop. Maps and directions to the University of Illinois at Chicago are available on the University of Illinois at Chicago visitor website.
Travel between the hotel and UIC
It is very feasible to walk from the hotel to the UIC campus. There are good sidewalks on both sides of Halsted St. The street and sidewalks go over the highway. Google Maps provides fairly accurate walking route information. Halsted St. is well lit and traveled by pedestrians and vehicles.
There are other options for transit, including the CTA bus line (#8) - which runs regularly during rush hour, rideshare, or cab. Cabs aren't always in the area, but if needed the hotel can call a cab for you.
Travel by Air
Chicago is served by two airports, Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) and O'Hare International Airport (ORD). We recommend arriving no later than 3:00pm on Wednesday, April 10th, and departing after 6:00pm on Friday, April 12th because travel to and from the airports takes approximately 1 hour.
Participants should arrange their own flight and ground transportation. The Crowne Plaza Chicago West Loop hotel is directly accessible the CTA Blue Line (serving ORD) or via the CTA Orange Line (serving MDW) with a transfer to either a bus or the CTA Blue Line. The UIC-Halsted stop on the Blue Line is the closest in proximity to the workshop location and hotel. Rental car, taxi, and rideshare is available at both airports.

Chicago is served by a number of different Amtrak routes.
Travel by Car
Parking
Parking at the Crowne Plaza Chicago West Loop is $49 a day. Spot Hero is another option to find parking around the city.
For local participants, parking is available on the UIC campus at the Halsted and Taylor Street Parking Structure (760 West Taylor Street). The entrance to this parking structure is on Taylor Street. Parking per day is ~$15.
From the North/Milwaukee, WI
Take I-94 East to exit 51D for Madison Street. Turn right onto W Madison Street and then take your first left on to South Halsted Street. The hotel will be on your left.
From the South/Champaign, IL
Take I-57 North for 118 miles to Chicago. Merge onto I-94 West and keep left at the fork to continue on I-94 Express West. Keep left to continue on I-94 Express/Interstate 90 Express, follow signs for Interstate 55 S/Interstate 90 W/Interstate 94 W/Ryan Expressway. Take exit 51D for Madison Street. Turn left onto W Madison Street and then another left on to South Halsted Street. The hotel will be on your left.
From the East/Gary, IN
Take I-90 West for 22 miles to Chicago. Use the left lane to take the I-90 W/I-94 W exit toward Ryan Expressway. Keep left to continue on I-94 Express/Interstate 90 Express, follow signs for Interstate 55 S/Interstate 90 W/Interstate 94 W/Ryan Expressway. Take exit 51D for Madison Street. Turn left onto W Madison Street and then another left on to South Halsted Street. The hotel will be on your left.
From the West/Iowa City, IA
From I-80 East, take exit 290 for Interstate 280/US-6 E toward Rock Island/Moline. Continue on I-80 East for 116 miles. Take exit 250B onto I-55 North to Chicago. Take exit 292A to merge onto I-90 W/I-94 W toward W Ryan Expressway/Wisconsin. Take exit 51D for Madison Street. Turn left onto W Madison Street and then another left on to South Halsted Street. The hotel will be on your left.
Accommodations
Participants are responsible for their own accommodations at the workshop.
A hotel block has been reserved at the Crowne Plaza Chicago West Loop arriving on Wednesday, April 10th and departing on Friday, April 12th. Participants must make their own reservations no later than February 28, 2019. Reservations can be made online using this link or by phone ( 312-829-5000). When you make your reservation, please mention Group Code 'DEI' to receive the discounted group rate. There are a limited number of rooms available, so book your lodging early!
The hotel is approximately 1/2 mile from the UIC campus. Please let us know if you have any concerns about accommodations or mobility. Accepted participants in need of other arrangements can include information on the registration form.
Communications
All applicants that have been accepted to this workshop will be added to a workshop participant email list. The email lists will be used by the conveners and support staff to send out additional information about the workshop program and logistics. Read these directions on how to ensure you receive workshop emails.
The hotel rooms and workshop meeting rooms all have free wireless internet access.
Each participant will need a laptop computer during the workshop. Please let us know when you register if you are unable to bring your own laptop.
Meals
Snacks, lunches, and dinners at the workshop will be provided. Participants are responsible for their own breakfast. All meals will include vegetarian offerings. If you require special special meals you will have an opportunity to provide more information when you register for the workshop.
