Geoscience Retreat Overview and Logistics

Workshop Goals

  • Help participants build stronger geoscience and environmental science programs and departments
  • Support academic success of all students through backwards design, curriculum alignment, formative and summative assessments, and active learning strategies
  • Continue to build a southern California regional network of 2YC geoscience departments/instructors

Dates, Times, and Meals

Friday August 25

  • 8:00-9:00 AM: Registration and breakfast (Huntington Gardens)
  • 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM: Workshop, includes lunch (Huntington Gardens)
  • 5:45 PM: Dinner at Caltech Athenaeum

Saturday August 26

  • 8:30-9:00 AM: Breakfast
  • 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM: Workshop, includes lunch (Huntington Gardens)
  • 6:00 PM: Dinner in Old Town Pasadena (cost of dinner not covered by workshop)

Expectations

  • Please bring a laptop to the workshop. If this is not possible, please contact eanagy-shadman@pasadena.edu.
  • Please bring either an example of a course topic you would like to teach in a more active way, or an activity that you do but need a better way of assessing, for Saturday.

Cost

This workshop is free to participants, thanks to generous support the Pasadena City College STEM Education Consortium, grants from the National Science Foundation and funding for the NAGT's Traveling Workshop Program. Saturday's dinner is not covered.
