Overview and Logistics

Workshop Goals

This workshop explores the components of a successful transfer of a geoscience major from a 2YC to a 4YC/U. In particular, the participants in this workshop will be able to

  • Know how to prepare a geoscience major to successfully transfer from a 2YC to a 4YC
  • Describe 4YC geoscience programs that are available in IL
  • List the careers that IL geoscience graduates typically go into
  • Describe the preparation students need to be successful in those careers

Date and times

Friday, November 8, 2019 from 8 AM to 4 PM in Student Center (Acrobat (PDF) 194kB Oct14 19)on the Waubonsee Community College Sugar Grove Campus. Get directions to the Sugar Grove Campus via Google Maps

Expectations

We ask that participants bring a laptop or tablet that connects to the internet

Each workshop participant is expected to:

  • In advance of the workshop
    • complete the registration form answering all questions. This helps us design a workshop that focuses on the needs of each participant.
    • If you have it available to you, please bring information about your former students; where they transferred and what they are currently doing. If all you have are your personal observations, that is OK.
    • If you have suggestions for courses that geoscience majors should take at your 2YC, either as a formal 'major' or 'guided pathway', or informal, please bring them. You might find a current catalogue to be useful.
    • There are 3 papers in the private workspace for this workshop that provide interesting background information on 2YC/4YC transfer. The ideas and conclusions will be useful during the workshop activities and discussions. You will need to have a valid SERC account to open this workspace.
  • During the workshop
    • We ask that you participate in all activities, from the beginning of the workshop at 8:00 am to the end at 4 pm.

Cost

This workshop is free to participants, thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Please let David Voorhees know of any dietary restrictions (dvoorhees@waubonsee.edu). Vegetarian options will be provided.
