10:15-11:15: Strong Starts and Transitions Session 1--choose one of the following sessions:

  • Navigating the academic job search and probationary process (PowerPoint 2007 (.pptx) 1MB Aug26 18): facilitated by Dave Mrofka
    This session is designed for individuals seeking community college teaching positions and new tenure-track faculty. Prospective and adjunct instructors will be given information on academic job search issues, including applying, interviewing, and developing a teaching statement. Tenure-track faculty will participate in a conversation about best practices in moving from probationary to tenured faculty status.
  • Opportunities for faculty and student professional development at two-year colleges (PowerPoint 2007 (.pptx) 65kB Sep4 18): facilitated by Sadie Kingsbury

    This session will provide examples of community college geoscience faculty who are participating in professional development activities beyond their regular teaching load, including service learning projects, faculty inquiry groups, externally funded grant programs, and joint appointments. The purpose of this session is to provide full-time and part-time faculty with ideas for pursuing professional growth opportunities to improve their teaching and their students' success.

11:30-12:30: Strong Starts and Transitions Session 2--choose one of the following sessions:
  • Infusing activities with a strong societal component into your teaching (PowerPoint 2007 (.pptx) 22.5MB Aug26 18): facilitated by Becca Walker
    This session will provide examples of introductory-level, published teaching materials from the InTeGrate and GETSI projects that give your students the opportunity to use authentic geoscience data and consider the impact of geoscience phenomena on society. Workshop participants will have time to explore an InTeGrate or GETSI module of their choice and think about how the materials would best be implemented in their classrooms.

1:15-2:15: Institutional Opportunities and Challenges
  • Full-time and adjunct faculty members have an opportunity to interact with their workshop partners to discuss institution-specific opportunities and challenges. This is an opportunity for informal conversation, but discussion questions will be provided if participants choose to utilize them.
  • Preservice faculty will participate in a session on community college interview, hiring, and tenure processes.
