Overview and Logistics
Workshop Goals
This workshop explores successful strategies for teaching all students in the same classroom with the goal of cultivating and identifying geoscience majors. The theory is we can do this by:
- exploring active learning techniques to make classes more engaging
- learning how to introduce metacognition strategies to your students to improve student success
Date and times
The workshop will take place on November 11, 2016, starting at 8:00 AM and ending at 4:00 PM in Room 210A of the Academic Building on the picturesque Illinois Central College campus in East Peoria.
Expectations
Workshop participants are expected to:
- Before the workshop: (1) complete the short survey questions to help us design a worship that focuses on the participants' needs, and (2) gather some of your best activities or approaches using active learning to share at the workshop.
- During the workshop: participate in all sessions, develop an action plan, and complete the end of workshop evaluation survey. If at all possible, please bring a laptop with you to be used during various sessions in the workshop.
- After the workshop: (1) implement an activity that you developed during the workshop or created later with ideas learned at the workshop, and (2) participate in a virtual follow-up in the spring on your action plan
Cost
This workshop is free to participants, thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Registration
Registration is open to any instructor, adjunct or full-time, in the disciplines of Earth Science, Geology, Geography, Meteorology, Oceanography or Astronomy at a Two-Year College in Illinois. We will limit the workshop to the first 24 participants, so register early! Registration will close 28 October.

Driving Directions: Illinois Central College, One College Drive, East Peoria, IL 61611
Parking Directions: College Drive is a one-way loop around campus (see map). Approaching the campus buildings, there will be a pedestrian crossing at Nature Court. Turn right onto Nature Court and the Visitors Parking Lot will be first on your left.
Campus Map: The workshop will be held in Room 210A, also known as the Tranquility Room. After parking in the Visitors Lot, walk to the main entrance of Illinois Central College. The Information Desk is just inside the main entrance. Turn left at the Information Desk and walk through the cafeteria. Room 210A will be on your left.

Food
We will provide a light breakfast and lunch. Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions (vegetarian, etc.)
