Spring 2018 Book Club
Claude Steele's "Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do"
Leaders: Bryn Benford and Kristie Bradford
Dates: This group will meet on April 13th (first half) and on April 27th (second half) from 9:30 - 10:30 am CDT
Goals: The goals of these meetings will be for each participant to learn about the how negative stereotypes can adversely affect their students and to find strategies that each participant can implement. The book has many practical recommendations, all of them based on extensive research on stereotype threat.
Format: We will discuss half the book during each synchronous session. Before each meeting, we will ask each of you to send us questions prompted by the reading, to prime the pump for our group discussion.
Registration Deadline: Please register for the book club by April 9, 2018
Connecting: We will use Zoom videoconferencing for our meetings. It's preferable if you can use your web cam so we can all be visible, but if that is not possible you can use the connect by phone option. Zoom connection information will be sent to those who register.
We will record the meetings so if you have to miss one you can listen to it later. Those recordings will be posted here.
