Developing Student Agency Through Community Exploration, Reflection, and Engagement
June 16-18, 2010
Beloit College, Beloit WI
This workshop focuses on generating exercises and assignments for the first semester of college that increase students' awareness of themselves in relation to multiple communities, local and global. The premise of the workshop is that forms of engagement and reflection facilitated by community exploration exercises foster the conditions under which students are more likely to take responsibility for and assume active ownership of their own educational and life choices. In addition, students develop a greater sensitivity to the choices and needs of others with whom they live in community.
Workshop participants developed and presented community exploration activities and assignments, together with instruments for assessing their success. In fall 2010, participants piloted and assessed the results of these exercises.
