Workshop Program: Increasing Inclusivity in Your Courses
- Workshop 1: What is Inclusivity?
- Goal: Increase the awareness of the important aspects that encompass creating an inclusive and welcoming course for all students.
- Homework with introduction to different concepts (stereotype threat, implicit bias, stereotype confirmation, microaggressions, etc.)
- Brief introduction and review of terms
- Breakout activity with matching examples to concepts/terms
- Share out with thoughts as we review the "correct" answers and clarify definitions
- Share data on equity gaps in science classes of attendees
- Questions and discussion
- Workshop 2: Teaching Strategies
- Goal: Share examples of strategies we have incorporated in our geosciences courses.
- Share examples from each of us
- Diversity & Inclusion Statement
- Scientist profiles
- Culturally responsive teaching
- Breakout rooms so attendees can discuss strategies and determine which ones they might want to use
- Share out thoughts about which strategies we might use
- Questions and discussion
- Workshop 3: Implementing Teaching Strategies
- Goal: Facilitate a discussion/group work that allows attendees to develop their own strategies to implement in their courses.
- Homework (and continuation from previous session) to pick strategy to use for their course
- Have them "preregister" with which strategy they'll use (to pre-organize breakout groups)
- Review types of strategies (in case new participants join who haven't attended previous sessions)
- Breakout groups that are specific to each strategy, so attendees can discuss together and give feedback
- Return and share out, get feedback from broader group and organizers
- Create (distribute?) ways to measure whether the implementation of the strategy worked
