Workshop Program

Fall 2020 Workshop Series

Workshop 1: How are underrepresented groups doing in YOUR STEM course? (50 minutes)

We will discuss course-level success rates in the course(s) you are most interested in examining. Success rates will be privately distributed to participants and they will have an opportunity to discuss insights as well as contributing factors with colleagues within their discipline and across STEM. Where do we see successes? Where are opportunities for improvement?

Workshop 2: Can your introductory STEM students envision themselves as scientists? (50 minutes)

What are stereotypes about scientists? What stereotypes do students have about scientists?

The representations we show of scientists can impact the future students can envision for themselves. We teach content-driven courses, but data demonstrates incorporating scientist spotlights as counterstereotypical examples of scientists can impact student retention and success in the sciences. We will discuss this tool and provide examples from our own courses.

Workshop 3: How can we make STEM content more relevant to our students? (50 minutes)

What STEM-related topics do you think are relevant to people in our local and global community? Expanding course content to include a more clear connection to environmental justice and other societally-relevant topics has been shown to improve course success rates for students of varied backgrounds. What are your ideas? What collaborations can we establish within STEM disciplines and those disciplines outside of STEM?
