Workshop Program
Series of virtual sessions
- Increase Student Success through Active Learning: Introduce and lead the active learning jigsaw activity. Ask each participant to commit to trying one new active learning strategy in their class this term.
- Build Students' Science Identity: Introduce and lead the Building Students' Science Identity session. Ask each participant to commit to trying one new strategy to build students' science identity in their class this term.
1st workshop (1.5 hours) - Friday, October 30th at 2pm
Minute 0 - 20 - Have each member briefly introduce themselves (Name, discipline). Introduction to what is active learning (1-2 slides) and several active learning strategies (6).
Minute 20 - 40 - Go into breakout rooms for 10 minutes. Each group will be given one strategy to discuss how they would implement it or design an assignment for their type of classroom. Have one member share their discussion from each group (5-10 minutes).
Minute 40 - 55 - Have attendees discuss issues pertaining to science identity and student belonging. Group discussion on Scientist Spotlight and how it may be incorporated into your course.
Minute 55 - 80 - Use this time to look at Scientist Spotlight examples and if time allows discuss the minute paper.
Minute 80 - 90 - Allow time for instructors to reflect and ask questions. Encourage faculty to return to second workshop after trying out one of the strategies.

2nd workshop (1.5 hours) - Friday, November 20th at 2pm
Round Table follow-up on instructors on what they tried, what they learned, and any issues or questions they may have.
