Activities and Examples Contribution Form

This is a new format for the contribution of teaching materials. This form is more in-depth than the old one, and the resulting collection will provide more information to users. It is not necessary to update existing activities that were submitted with the old form. However, if you would like to update an activity that you previously submitted, you are encourage to do so.

You retain all rights to your contributed work and are responsible for referencing other people's work and for obtaining permission to use any copyrighted material within your contribution. By contributing your work to this web site, you give On the Cutting Edge a license for non-commercial distribution of the material, provided that we attribute the material to you. View our license policy for more details about this kind of Creative Commons (more info) license.

This form and the file uploads must be completed in a single session. Leaving the page erases the data. You cannot submit a partially completed form and return to it later.

Please note that, after submission, our support staff must do some preparatory work to catalog and post these resources. We hope to make your contributions "live" within one to two weeks of your submission. Thank you in advance for making this contribution!

Sample Description

This activity is a laboratory-style exercise that involves investigating the physical controls on viscosity by pouring different syrup mixtures down an inclined plane and using Jeffreys equation to calculate viscosity. Students time the syrup flows and then calculate viscosities. The four sets of experiments include examining the effects of temperature, dissolved water, solids and bubbles on syrup viscosity. Students then use Jeffreys equation to calculate the velocities of a variety of lava flow compositions. They also investigate the effects of composition, temperature, dissolved water and solids numerically using the freeware program MAGMA by K. Wohletz.

Upload files

We encourage you to upload files with the full activity description or actual assignment, instructor’s notes, and a solution set. You may also upload additional supporting materials such as grading rubrics, data files, images, and sample student work. Individual files should be smaller than 20 Mb. Files larger than this will have long download times that will limit their accessibility. If necessary, put large images in separate files, and compress images to allow for easy downloading.

Please be sure to assign titles to your files that clearly identify their contents and purposes. Please note that your files will be uploaded when you submit this form.

Activity Description/Assignment

A single file containing a complete description of the activity or the actual assignment given to students. Please be sure to include a cover page with at least a title, author(s), affiliation, and contact information. We encourage you to provide relevant background information, context, and goals on the same cover sheet.

.

Instructor's Notes

A single file with additional background information for the instructor. This might include a discussion of the background knowledge and skills needed to complete the activity, lecture notes, instructions on how to run the activity, tips for success, etc.

.

Solution Set

A single file with the solutions to the activity.

.

Supporting Materials

You may upload up to five additional files to accompany your submission. If you have more than five additional files, please combine them (e.g., a .zip archive) for uploading.
