Quantitatively skilled Earth science graduates are critical to meeting the needs of the workforce and the country. This virtual workshop will introduce Earth science instructors to co-curricular math and statistics modules and work with instructors to develop implementation plans for using the materials during the 2025-26 academic year.

This is the third workshop focused on co-curricular modules for majors-level Earth science courses with The Math Your Earth Science Majors Need (TMYN-Majors) project. The 2023 and 2024 workshops created 14 modules that teach math and statistics concepts in the context of geoscience and have been tested over the last two academic years. An earlier project -- The Math You Need -- developed modules for introductory-level Earth science courses.

Virtual Workshop description

This workshop will gather ~20-30 undergraduate instructors and facilitators to examine TMYN-Majors co-curricular modules and develop implementation plans for using the modules to strengthen quantitative skill development for majors-level undergraduate geoscience courses. The virtual workshop will use Zoom for presentations, discussions, breakout sessions, and individual work time. Participants will receive $400 stipends upon the completion of the virtual workshop.

Logistics

The virtual workshop will be held online, on July 14–17, Monday–Thursday, from 1 pm – 3 pm ET.

Expectations

Participants who register for the virtual workshop are committing to:

  • Doing some preparatory activities (~1 hour)
  • Attending the entire virtual workshop (8 hours)
  • Creating a teaching implementation plan (which will be developed during the workshop)

Eligible participants

To be supported by these funds, participants must be a US citizen, a permanent resident, or in the employ of a US institution. Although the primary audience is current undergraduate instructors, graduate students and postdocs interested in undergraduate teaching, are also welcome.

Workshop application

Registration deadline: Saturday, June 14, 2025.

  • The registration is through Submittable with the Earthscope Consortium. Registrants will be required to create a Submittable account to register.
  • The registration fee is $40.

Workshop goals

  1. Introduce undergraduate instructors to TMYN-Majors math and statistics modules
  2. Provide structured introduction to the TMYN-Majors quantitative topics integration model
  3. Have participants complete implementation plans for using the modules
  4. Engage community members in discussions of what else is needed to support quantitative skills (e.g., quantitative skills courses and quantitative skills integration across the curriculum)
