Lynsey is an Instructor at Virginia Peninsula Community College in Hampton, VA, where she teaches Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Oceanography, and the science capstone class, Design and Application of Scientific Research.  She also currently serves as the Coordinator for the Center for Teaching and Learning, leading faculty professional development initiatives on campus.  

Lynsey has been involved with multiple NAGT initiatives and workshops for more than a decade.  Lynsey is a past president of the Geo2YC division of NAGT, and currently serves as a Councilor-at-Large on the NAGT Executive Committee.  She was involved in the Supporting and Advancing Geoscience Education at the Two-Year College (SAGE2YC) multi-year project as part of the Virginia change agent team.  She is also one of the leaders for the Preparing for an Academic Career workshop.

Student success and developing those necessary skills in students extends beyond the geosciences and while I use geoscience topics, I work to address and develop cross-curricular success skills throughout assignments all semester. This is true in all classes that I teach, but I will describe how this has been built into the introduction to oceanography classes at Thomas Nelson Community College.

A "Jobs in Geosciences" Speaker Series: Addressing What Geologists Really Do part of SAGE 2YC:Workshops:Preparing Students in Two-year Colleges for Careers:Essays
The geology department at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) recently initiated a program to bring geologists employed in a variety of fields to campus. Noted both anecdotally and through survey data collected about perceptions and careers in geosciences, students often have misconceptions about what geologists actually do in their various job functions. To address these misconceptions, the "jobs in geosciences" speaker series was started. This was funded by a small grant from the TNCC Educational Foundation.
