We explain the conditions necessary for the formation of glaciers and describe the features of both ice sheets (massive, thick contain very old ice, form in polar regions) and alpine glaciers (smaller, younger ice, found in mountains). You will learn that glaciers in specific locations may have special names such as tidewater, cirque, or piedmont glaciers.
