Participant Checklist

Prep before the workshop

1) Attend or watch recordings from the pre-workshop meetings

At a minimum, attend or watch the session about 1) your primary geophysics method and 2) GPS/GNSS. You are encouraged to watch all of them to learn more. Times are listed on the Program page. Real-time attendance is recommended but recordings and associated presentation slides will be available on the Program page after each event.

2) Some general tasks (complete by Thursday July 2)

  • Complete the short knowledge assessment survey sent to you after the webinars (this will help make sure you have gathered foundational knowledge about the methods you are focusing on)
  • Complete the field trip waiver form when it is sent to you via DocuSign
  • IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY, make an EPIC account, so you'll be ready to use it during the workshop (this was also included in the pre-workshop travel and logistics survey but not everyone has done it).

3) Look through teaching modules

Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the near-surface geophysics teaching modules -- at least look at your primary method and GPS/GNSS. These free online resources have been developed through the EarthScope-led project GEophysics Tools for Societal Issues (GETSI) .

4) Download software

Everyone should download the GNSS/GPS items and the software for their primary method. It is fine to download all the software if you are interested in practicing a bit with the other methods. Some of the software is only available for Windows. Bring a Windows laptop if you can. We will have some extras available. Some participants may share machines.

  • GPS/GNSS - everyone should download this (iPhone and Android)
    • Emlid Flow app - iPhone or Android app store
  • GPR (Windows only)
  • Active seismic (Windows only)
    • Download SeisImager/2D from Geometrics - using the Download Software button. Be sure to note down the location where the program is saved (the default location seems to be: C: > Program Files (x86) > SeisImager)
    • When the installation is complete, you can Exit out of the registration window without entering anything.
    • The demonstration version may be launched 15 times before you need to purchase a license, so you can wait to actually open it until the workshop.
    • Note: The component of the software suite that we will be using in the workshop is "Pickwin95.exe"
  • Electrical resistivity (Windows, Mac, or Linex)

5) Watch helpful videos about near-surface methods

The following videos can be really helpful introductions to near-surface geophysics methods, if you are unfamiliar with the methods and their applications. We recommend watching at least the overview video and ones pertaining to the method you'll focus on.

Getting your travel reimbursement (to be completed after the workshop, by July 17)

Submit paperwork by July 17

  1. Reimbursement payments will be sent through direct deposit to your bank account (ACH)
At your soonest convenience after the workshop starts, complete this EarthScope Participant Financial Info Form.
  2. Reimbursement information
    1. Immediately after the workshop, please fill out the relevant cells in the 2026 Geophysics Field Education Workshop Travel Expense Report Spreadsheet (Excel 2007 (.xlsx) 132kB Apr15 26)
    2. Add travel expenses (flights, ground transit, mileage, etc.)
    3. "Sign" expense report spreadsheet - to sign you can:
      1. Type your name in the cell then save spreadsheet as PDF
      2. OR save spreadsheet as PDF and sign it using Adobe's signature function
  3. Collect receipts for all expenses
    1. If you drove, include a map (ex. Google Maps) showing mileage
    2. If you drove even though flying would be cheaper, include the screenshot used to get driving approval of a travel search (ex. Travelocity) showing multiple comparable flight options.
  4. Combine into a single PDF - signed spreadsheet AND receipts
  5. Send the single PDF to beth.pratt-sitaula@earthscope.org
  6. You will be reimbursed up to $750 for transport and $192 for lunch and dinner per diem on workshop days.
