Strategies in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Monday 1:30pm-4:00pm Lindley: 123
Afternoon Mini Workshop

Conveners

Sarah Bean Sherman, University of British Columbia
Alison Jolley (AJ), University of Waikato
Emily Scribner, Clemson University

Do you ever wonder about the efficacy of the active learning techniques you are using in class? This workshop is for anyone who wants to learn more about assessing the impact of teaching and learning on their students through sound research design focused on questions of interest. Participants will be exposed to common methods of data collection and analysis and utilize these to develop research plans. This workshop is primarily designed for people who are new to the scholarship of teaching and learning. However, we also welcome participants who are more experienced in this field to attend and contribute their knowledge. We envision that everyone will benefit from working with each other through mutual sharing of ideas.

Goals

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  1. Identify research questions in geoscience teaching and learning
  2. Compare the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) to geoscience research
  3. Investigate methods commonly used in SoTL
  4. Develop a plan to investigate a research question in geoscience teaching and learning

Program
