Workshop Details
The program will begin on Sunday evening, June 23, 2024 promptly at 5:00 pm at the Smail Gallery in the Olin-Rice Science Center at Macalester College. The workshop will conclude on Thursday evening, June 27. There is an optional virtual visit to the National Science Foundation the following Friday, June 28.
Note: While the formal workshop program starts at 5:00 pm on Sunday evening, we ask that you arrive early enough on Sunday to check in and get settled before the workshop so that you will be ready to take full advantage of the program on Sunday. If your travel schedule prevents you from arriving with sufficient lead time on Sunday before the start of the workshop, you may choose to arrive on Saturday, June 22 at no additional cost. Participants may also choose to remain on-campus for the virtual NSF visit on Friday for their convenience, although you may participate in the virtual visit from anywhere. For convenience, participants remaining on campus for the NSF virtual visit on Friday, June 28 may also elect to remain in the dorms Friday night and check out on Saturday, June 29 if they wish.
Workshop Check-In: Sunday, June 23
- Workshop Check-in will take place in the George Draper Dayton Hall Lobby from 11 am to 4 pm CDT. Participant folders and name tags will be distributed at check-in. After 4 pm, please check in directly at the Smail Gallery in the Olin-Rice Science Center. If you plan to arrive before Sunday June 23, please contact the leader team at earlycareer.geosci@gmail.com
- Dorm Logistics - Dorm check-in is at George Draper Dayton Hall at the times given above. Linens (pillow, pillowcase, sheets, blanket, 2 towels) will be provided, but toiletries (soap, shampoo, etc.) are not; you will need to bring your own. Meal cards can be picked up at the time of check-in. Dorm check-out time is 9:00 am on Friday, June 28 (unless you are staying in the dorms on Friday night). For participants who wish to remain on campus on Friday to participate in the virtual NSF visit, we will have classrooms in Olin-Rice available for your participation in various sessions. A secure room will be made available for your luggage. You can contact Events Operations on the check-in days at 615-696-6638 with any questions. If you plan to check in after hours, please contact the workshop conveners (earlycareer.geosci@gmail.com) to coordinate a late check-in time.
Opening Activities
We strongly encourage all participants to be on campus and checked in by the start of the opening activities on Sunday at 5 PM. However, if your travel logistics preclude this, please indicate the date and time of your arrival on the travel information form and reach out to the leader team to make alternate arrangements.
Optional NSF Trip
We are offering an optional virtual visit to the National Science Foundation on June 28, immediately following the in-person workshop. You may choose to stay on campus to participate if that is the most convenient option for you. We encourage all workshop attendees to participate in the visit if possible. Travel
Participants are responsible for their travel to and from the workshop. Maps and directions to St. Paul, MN are available on the Macalester College website.
Transportation to St. Paul, MN by Air
Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport (MSP) is the best option for air travel to St. Paul. The campus is approximately a 15-minute drive/cab ride from the airport.
There are public transportation, taxi service, and rideshare options from the MSP Airport. The Metro Blue Line runs every 15 minutes from MSP Airport Terminal 1 and is the most economical shuttle option. Use your favorite navigation app (e.g., Google Maps) or visit Metro Transit for detailed instructions to travel from the airport to Macalester College (note: some walking between stops is required).
Travel by Rail
Some Amtrak routes serve the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

Accommodations
Participants will stay in single-occupancy rooms/suites in air-conditioned residence halls at Macalester College. Standard linens (pillow, pillow case, sheets, blanket, towel) will be provided. You need to bring your own toiletries (soap, shampoo, etc.). You may also wish to bring clothes hangers or garment bag.

On-Site Logistics
Internet Access:
Complimentary internet access will be available at Macalester College. Access instructions will be available at check-in.
Parking:
For those traveling by car to Macalester College, parking is free on campus for workshop participants. See the above link in the accommodations section for a campus map with visitor parking lots indicated on it.
What to bring:
Dress will be casual during the workshop. Please be prepared for cool air-conditioned buildings and the hot/humid outdoors. Rain sometime during the week is likely.
Linens will be provided in the dorms (pillow, pillow case, sheets, blanket, 2 towels), but you must bring your own toiletries (soap, shampoo, etc). The linens are fairly basic, so if you desire, you may bring your own linens.
Meals:
For those staying in the dorms, breakfast and lunch will be provided Monday through Thursday at an on-campus dining hall. Some, but not all, of the other meals during the week will be provided. There will be various options, including vegetarian/vegan entrees. We expect to be able to satisfy most food preferences and restrictions. Please tell us about any special dietary restrictions on the travel information form.
