Optional NSF Trip
We are offering an optional one-day trip to the National Science Foundation on Friday, July 14 (see schedule - opens in a new window). We will start with an orientation session followed by small group meetings with program officers. Following that, NSF staff will offer group sessions on some specific NSF programs and you will be able to meet individually with NSF program officers. Transportation to NSF is on your own (see metro travel info below). This NSF trip is optional, but we encourage everyone, including faculty from two-year colleges, to attend.
If you opt to stay in DC on Friday night you will be responsible for finding accommodations and the cost of the extra night's stay.
Participants are responsible for their travel to and from the workshop. Maps and Directions to College Park are available on the UMD web site.
Transportation to College Park, MD by Air
Reagan National Airport (DCA) is the most convenient to College Park. The campus is approximately a 30-minute drive/cab ride from the airport
Alternatively, you can fly in to Baltimore/Washington International airport or Dulles International airport. Travel times to these airports will vary due to traffic, and travel times can be highly variable, but it typically it takes ~40 minutes to/from BWI to UMD and an hour to an hour and a half to/from Dulles.
There are public transportation, taxi service, and SuperShuttle options for each of the airports. The metro stops at Reagan International airport and also at NSF (Ballston) and near UMD campus (College Park station - there's a shuttle bus from the metro station to UMD campus). For more details about ground transportation options from each airport, see the red text at bottom of the Maps and Directions web page, under "By Air."
If you attend the NSF trip, you may choose to fly home on the afternoon or evening of July 29. Travel time from the NSF offices to Dulles is at least one hour (and may be more during rush hour); to Reagan National you should allow at least one-half hour if during rush hour. The Washington DC Airport Shuttle serves both airports. They will pick up at the door and deliver to the airport.
