Workshop Overview

Application deadline: March 18, 2015

The Early Career Geoscience Faculty workshop is designed for those in their first three years of a tenure-track or equivalent faculty position. If you are in the process of applying for tenure-track or other permanent faculty positions, we encourage you to apply both to this workshop and to the Preparing for an Academic Career workshop, with a note that you are in the process of applying for faculty positions. If you are a graduate student or post-doc who will not be in a faculty position next year, then the Preparing for an Academic Career workshop is designed for you.

Workshop Goals for Participants

  • Learn about setting course goals, strategies for active learning, and methods for assessment.
  • Share ideas and strategies for teaching one or more courses.
  • Consider successful strategies for maintaining an active research program and advising/supervising undergraduate and/or graduate research students.
  • Discuss life as an early-career faculty member and explore ways to balance teaching, research, and service responsibilities.
  • Leave with examples of assignments and activities for various courses, strategies for balancing competing demands, a support network of other early career faculty, and a plan for managing your early career as an academic.

Cost

On-site costs: The workshop fee of $700 (NAGT members are eligible for discounted registration of $650; learn more about becoming a member of NAGT) will cover accommodations on the William and Mary campus and most meals. If you will have local housing, the registration fee will be $400 ($350 for NAGT members). If you require accommodations on Friday night (July 31), there is an additional fee of $60. Learn more about how your registration fees are used.

Our National Science Foundation grant provides funding for the remainder of the operational costs of the workshop. To be supported by these funds, a participant must be either a US citizen, a permanent resident, or in the employ of a US institution. If you don't meet these requirements and are interested in participating in this workshop at your own expense, please contact the workshop conveners.

Travel: Participants or their home institutions must provide transportation to and from the workshop. For those participating in the post-workshop trip to NSF, bus transportation will be provided to and from NSF.

Stipends: In cases where the cost of attending this workshop would cause financial hardship, you can apply for a stipend to help defray these costs.

Application and Selection Criteria

The workshop size is limited. The final list of participants will be established with the goal of assembling a group representing a wide range of experiences and educational environments. Priority is given to those in tenure-track (or equivalent) positions in the geosciences.

The application deadline is March 18, 2015.

Facilities

The workshop will be held at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. Participants will stay on campus at the college. There is no fee for on-campus parking, and complimentary internet will be available in the dorms and the meeting venue.
