Participant Checklist

Prep before the workshop (before July 29)

1) Attend or watch recordings from the pre-workshop meetings

At a minimum, attend or watch the session about your primary geophysics method. You are welcome/encouraged to watch all of them to learn more. Recordings and associated presentation slides are available on the Program page.

  • Monday July 14
    • Ground penetrating radar - 1pm PT, 2pm MT, 3pm CT, 4pm ET
  • Tuesday July 15
    • Seismic refraction - 9am PT, 10am MT, 11am CT, 12pm ET
    • Electrical resistivity - 1pm PT, 2pm MT, 3pm CT, 4pm ET

2) Some general tasks

  • Complete the short formative assessment survey sent to you after the webinars (this will help the instructors better plan for the workshop)
  • Complete the field trip waiver form when it is sent to you via DocuSign
  • IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY, make the following accounts, so you'll be ready to use them during the workshop (this was also included in the pre-workshop travel and logistics survey but not everyone has done it).

3) Look through teaching modules

Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the near-surface geophysics teaching modules -- at least look at your primary method and GPS/GNSS. These free online resources have been developed through the EarthScope-led project GEophysics Tools for Societal Issues (GETSI) .

4) Download software

Everyone should download the GNSS/GPS items and the software for their primary method. It is fine to download all the software if you are interested in practicing a bit with the other methods. Some of the software is only available for Windows. Bring a Windows laptop if you can. We will have some extras available. Some participants may share machines.

  • GPS/GNSS - everyone should download this (iPhone and Android)
    • Emlid Flow app - iPhone or Android app store
  • GPR (Windows only)
  • Active seismic (Windows only)
    • Download SeisImager/2D from Geometrics - using the Download Software button. Be sure to note down the location where the program is saved (the default location seems to be: C: > Program Files (x86) > SeisImager)
    • When the installation is complete, you can Exit out of the registration window without entering anything.
    • The demonstration version may be launched 15 times before you need to purchase a license, so you can wait to actually open it until the workshop.
    • Note: The component of the software suite that we will be using in the workshop is "Pickwin95.exe"
  • Electrical resistivity (Windows, Mac, or Linex)

5) Watch helpful videos about near-surface methods

The following videos can be really helpful introductions to near-surface geophysics methods, if you are unfamiliar with the methods and their applications. We recommend watching at least the overview and ones pertaining to the method you'll focus on.

Getting your travel reimbursement (to be completed after the workshop, by August 8)

Submit paperwork by August 8

  1. Reimbursement payments will be sent through direct deposit to your bank account (ACH)
