Participant Checklist
By June 16
- Arrange your travel to Denver - see Workshop Logistics page
- Complete the Participant Travel Information Form (Opens in a new window) to tell conveners your travel and participation information by Monday June 16
Prep before the workshop (before July 29)
1) Attend or watch recordings from the pre-workshop meetings
At a minimum, attend or watch the session about your primary geophysics method. You are welcome/encouraged to watch all of them to learn more. Recordings and associated presentation slides are available on the Program page.
- Monday July 14
- Ground penetrating radar - 1pm PT, 2pm MT, 3pm CT, 4pm ET
- Tuesday July 15
- Seismic refraction - 9am PT, 10am MT, 11am CT, 12pm ET
- Electrical resistivity - 1pm PT, 2pm MT, 3pm CT, 4pm ET
2) Some general tasks
- Complete the short formative assessment survey sent to you after the webinars (this will help the instructors better plan for the workshop)
- Complete the field trip waiver form when it is sent to you via DocuSign
- IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY, make the following accounts, so you'll be ready to use them during the workshop (this was also included in the pre-workshop travel and logistics survey but not everyone has done it).
- EarthScope instrument request system: https://epic.earthscope.org/sdb/newuser_application
- SERC: https://serc.carleton.edu/account/loginout.php
3) Look through teaching modules
Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the near-surface geophysics teaching modules -- at least look at your primary method and GPS/GNSS. These free online resources have been developed through the EarthScope-led project GEophysics Tools for Societal Issues (GETSI) .
4) Download software
Everyone should download the GNSS/GPS items and the software for their primary method. It is fine to download all the software if you are interested in practicing a bit with the other methods. Some of the software is only available for Windows. Bring a Windows laptop if you can. We will have some extras available. Some participants may share machines.
- GPS/GNSS - everyone should download this (iPhone and Android)
- Emlid Flow app - iPhone or Android app store
- GPR (Windows only)
- Request download of EKKO software - NOTE: this gets you a 14-day fully functional trial license.
- GPR EKKO Project Software Download and Install Instructions (Microsoft Word 2007 (.docx) 962kB Jul12 24)
- Download, but don't install until the workshop (or shortly before)
- Active seismic (Windows only)
- Download SeisImager/2D from Geometrics - using the Download Software button. Be sure to note down the location where the program is saved (the default location seems to be: C: > Program Files (x86) > SeisImager)

- The demonstration version may be launched 15 times before you need to purchase a license, so you can wait to actually open it until the workshop.
- Note: The component of the software suite that we will be using in the workshop is "Pickwin95.exe"
- Electrical resistivity (Windows, Mac, or Linex)
- Install ResIPy on your laptop. Note: To use ResIPy on a Mac, you will also need to install Wine.
- ResIPy downloading and installation instructions (Microsoft Word 2007 (.docx) 5.2MB Sep15 24)
5) Watch helpful videos about near-surface methods
The following videos can be really helpful introductions to near-surface geophysics methods, if you are unfamiliar with the methods and their applications. We recommend watching at least the overview and ones pertaining to the method you'll focus on.
- GREAT OVERVIEW - Introduction to Near-Surface Geophysics
- GPR
- Seismic Refraction
- Seismic refraction
- Seismic refraction and reflection - what all the waves look like together
- ERT
- (extra because you love this stuff) Gravity: What Is Gravity? How can we use it to find buried objects in the Earth?
Getting your travel reimbursement (to be completed after the workshop, by August 8)
Submit paperwork by August 8
- Reimbursement payments will be sent through direct deposit to your bank account (ACH)
At your soonest convenience after the workshop starts, complete this EarthScope Participant Financial Info Form. - Reimbursement information
- Immediately after the workshop, please fill out the relevant cells in the 2025 Geophysics Field Education Workshop Travel Expense Report Spreadsheet (Excel 2007 (.xlsx) 132kB Jun23 25)
- Add travel expenses (flights, ground transit, mileage, etc.)
- "Sign" expense report spreadsheet - to sign you can:
- Type your name in the cell then save spreadsheet as PDF
- OR save spreadsheet as PDF and sign it using Adobe's signature function
- Collect receipts (you do not need to provide receipts for expenses less than $70)
- Combine into a single PDF - signed spreadsheet AND receipts
- Send the single PDF to beth.pratt-sitaula@earthscope.org
- You will be reimbursed up to $750.
