Hi Otter,

Will you be posting the modified PowerPoint to go along with this lesson or did you post it the first time?

I still would like to try something like this with our students. I think it would be a lot of fun for the kids making it a great learning experience. Besides it might give them a greater appreciation for their surroundings once they see what is actually around them with a closer inspection that this experiment allows.

Do you know if there is a Garmin Nuvi (or other driving GIS unit) that one could use like the GIS units we used this past summer which gives the latitude and longitude AND allows one to mark the data? I was thinking the school won't purchase the GIS Units but maybe I could purchase the driving unit and then utilize it at school for projects to demonstrate GIS to the students and how it can be used.

Perhaps, you have some knowledge that could help me out.

Anne Marie

Otter,

The strength of your work is, I believe, the "Dummy's Guide..." which is the critical (but too often omitted) part of the instructions that makes all the difference. Without it, newbies become frustrated and remain newbies. Nice going with the lesson, I hope it encourages long term connection between kids and trees, even if only in the future to be able to say "here, in 2009, stood a noble oak."

Hello Otter,
I thought of you while viewing (re-viewing the movie WALL-E) but I digress. I wanted to finish up the year with a GIS project and believe as Bob stated your "dummies guide" is a necessity toward reaching that goal. We have a fairly new building (15 yrs.) and so the trees surrounding the building are young. It will be exciting to see the growth over the span of my career at the middle school (God willing). Also, I can connect with the environmental issues we discuss every day. Nice lesson.

Otter,
I am unsure if you will receive this email but I was looking into whether my lesson plan had been chosen for the AMGEN award and noticed a lesson from 2007 regarding coyotes and a "Robert" Brown from Wheeler School was attached. This must be you. So, congrats (belated).
Andrea
