DNA Measurements ImageJ
Well, www.dnai.org has video animations of the translation process and shows mRNA leaving through nuclear pores, loading onto ribosomes, and being translated. However, I could find still images. Of course you can also just do a Google Image search for RNA.

Thanks, David! I did try google, came up with tons of useless images. None that had RNA and a scale on it to use in ImageJ. dnai.org has fantastic videos but didn't see anything with the scale needed. I have DNA slides with scale. Maybe I should just stick with DNA...

The student handout. Please let me know if it makes sense or needs more explanation. Thanks!

Michelle, your students are freshmen? Are they pretty accomplished with Excel? I wish mine were. (7th graders with no computer tech class til 8th grade!)It makes new lessons so much easier when the students have some previously learned skills to build on.

Great job, Michelle! I am going to use a similar version of this lesson on Friday - my students are finishing up working on DNA and genetics, and I want to get them working more with Excel for their science projects. This is a great lesson to tie the two items together!
I work with Celeste, so we have the same problem with 7th graders not having much in the way of computer tech skills. How have your students reacted to using excel and IJ?

Michelle would it be possible to repost DNA handout as an older version of Word. I could open the first document but can't open the second document. I don't have the newer version nor the operating system that allows the translation.
I'm interested in your discussion in students in the younger grades not having the exposure to computer tech skills until the 8th grade. I'm hoping my system will smarten up under new administration as to how beneficial it is to expose students in the earlier grades in the use of computers as tools with programs such as these across curriculum.
Seeing the various ways teachers in the subject areas use these tools allows someone like me to understand what I need to do to help students use these tools proficiently.

Hi Celeste and Kristina, My freshmen have been exposed to ImageJ, I am not sure about Excel, I have a rotating schedule so When I wrote the plan I didn't have my freshmen. I will have them on Monday and plan to do the lesson Wednesday to Friday. I will update with any issues.
I may have to teach excel and probably teach graphing. Depending on their exposure I may have them graph on paper first.
Also I will post both documents in an older version of Word, sorry I forget when I am home to do that. I will have to do that tonight.
