Teaching Online

Thursday 1:30pm-4:00pm Student Union: Acoma A and B
Afternoon Mini Workshop

Cory Pettijohn, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Stephen Marshak, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Please join us for this afternoon mini-workshop as we collaborate in a discussion of educational technology resources and practices that help to engage both blended and fully online classroom learners in readings and video lessons.

We will address the issue of how to build both foundational learning components (often neglected due to the lack of accountability and assessment challenges) and applied learning component. We anticipate lively discussion of methods to encourage student accountability, for without accountability, a majority of students in either blended or fully online classrooms do not take the time to participate in online lecture segments and/or required readings before delving into higher-order assignments that can't be done well without a foundation of knowledge and context.

We will also explore the variety of resources from which instructors can develop their courses, and will consider how to incorporate these into online education. For example, web-available materials (from government agencies or from educational facilitators), as well as from book publishers, include: adaptive learning study guides, e-texts, interactive quizzes, and guided animations. Workshop participants will identify additional online resources and media assets to incorporate in instructor screencast lessons, will develop an interactive video lesson segment, and will share insights into actively engaging mobile learners in, and assess learning outcomes from, readings and lectures hosted in the online classroom.

Participants are encouraged to bring notebook/laptop computers or tablets to complete activities and demonstrate their own materials.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have. . .

  • discussed motivations for teaching and learning online
  • identified challenges of online learning
  • reviewed educational technology resources
  • identified resources for building screencast lessons
  • developed an interactive video lesson
