The Building Strong Geoscience Departments Workshop will be held at the College of William and Mary.
Computer Access
We encourage all participants to bring a laptop computer, preferably with wireless internet access capability. A limited number of hard-wire internet access ports will be available during the workshops as well.
Airline Reservations
Please call a travel agent at Northfield Travel toll-free at 1-800-657-4888 (central time zone). Tell them you are traveling for the "Geosciences Departments" meeting, and your tickets will be billed directly to our account.
Arrival and Departure Information
The workshop will begin with an opening program on Thursday evening, February 24th, 2005. We will gather for a reception and dinner at 5:30 pm upstairs in the College of William and Mary's Alumni House, directly across Richmond Road from the Hospitality House, where invited participants are lodging. The workshop will end after dinner on Saturday evening, February 26, 2005.
Transportation to Williamsburg
William and Mary is located 150 miles south of Washington, D.C., midway between Richmond and Norfolk on I-64.
By Air:Three airports serve the Williamsburg area: 1. Richmond, 2. Newport News, and 3. Norfolk. Unless the schedule or fares are significantly better in Norfolk, it is easier to travel to Williamsburg from Richmond or Newport News. Patrick Henry Airport in Newport News is about 20 minutes by car from Williamsburg; Richmond is about 50 minutes by car and Norfolk is one hour or more depending on traffic. Ground transportation other than taxis from Richmond and Norfolk will take longer as they will make stops along the way.
After we have travel information for all participants, we will provide information about arrival times to coordinate ground transportation to Williamsburg.
Richmond International Airport:Ground transportation: Groome Transportation 1-800-552-7911. Groome leaves the Airport every hour on the hour. Exit the airport from the baggage claim area-Groome leaves from the island in the middle of the road. The cost is $40.00 one-way and $71.00 round-trip.
Newport News/Williamsburg Patrick Henry Airport:Served by the following taxicab companies: Associated Cab (757-887-3412), North End Cab (757-244-4000), Williamsburg Limosine (757-877-0279), and Yellow Cab (757-245-7777). Taxicab fares from the airport to the campus range from $27 to $32 per car.
Norfolk International Airport:Airport Express Service 757-857-3991: Rates are $50 one-way and $95.00 round trip. Exit from door three, the Express Service is in a small booth on the left.
By Rail:Williamsburg is served by Amtrak. The distance from the train station to the Hospitality House (five blocks) is within walking distance, or you may wish to take a taxicab.
By Automobile:From the North and West Areas (i.e. Northern Virginia, DC)
- Take Interstate-64 East
- Take exit 238, follow signs toward Colonial Williamsburg
- Take a right at the 2nd traffic light onto Rt. 132
- Go straight through 2 traffic lights
- Make the next right onto Scotland St.
- Go 3 blocks to the traffic light, the Hospitality House is on right.
- Parking is available for hotel guests at the Hospitality House lot.
From the South and East Areas (i.e. Virginia Beach, Norfolk)
- Take Interstate 64 West
- Take exit 238, follow signs toward Colonial Williamsburg
- Take a right at the 2nd traffic light onto Rt. 132

What to Bring:
Dress will be casual during the workshop--be prepared for seasonably cool temperatures. Average high temperatures for Williamsburg in February are around 50 degrees F, average lows are at the freezing point.
