The workshop itself is free; but attendees must be registered, have a badge and potentially present proof of vaccination (as per AGU guidelines); registration will open in September (keep checking link). This one-day workshop provides an opportunity for heads and chairs of Earth and Space Science departments to discuss issues and strategies for building a strong department, meet other heads and chairs, and learn more about current issues. The workshop program includes sessions on the topics listed below.

  • Breakfast
  • Welcome by Pranoti Asher, Assistant Director, Grants and Education Programs, AGU and Eva Kostyu, Program Manager, Bridge Program, AGU
  • Participant Introductions (name, title, institution)
  • Morning session
    • NAS report "Advancing Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEM Organizations: A Consensus Study (Presenters: Dr. Emily Vargas, National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine and Dr. David Asai, former Howard Hughes Medical Institute)
    • Fundamentals of Equity in Graduate Admissions (Presenter, TBD)
  • Lunch and Small group discussions (based on participant interest)
  • Afternoon sessions
    • Strategies for Equity-based Holistic Review (Presenter, TBD)
    • Updates from AGI on geoscience workforce (Christopher Keane, AGI)
    • Updates from SERC and NAGT and opportunities for the future (Holly Kelchner, SERC and NAGT)
