Capstone Field Mapping Assessment Rubric

Purpose

Designed to assess student knowledge, skills, aptitudes, and creative thinking in the field setting.

Implementation

The basic rubric is employed for all major mapping projects in our capstone field geology course and is provided to all students in hard copy prior to the first mapping project. Specific "grading forms" for each mapping project are created using the rubric as a template.

Use of the Data

Only three years of data exist and we are now beginning to use this to assess progress from one mapping project to the next, and also the relative performance of our students versus those from other institutions.

Effectiveness

The rubric has helped to clarify expectations and seems to have improved the final product. Beyond these observations, it is too soon to say more.
