Moving Your Research to a Primarily Undergraduate Institution (PUI)

Groups of participants in the session on moving your research to a PUI at the 2009 workshop on Preparing for an Academic Career in the Geosciences were assigned scenarios about the challenges they might face at a PUI. Each group brainstormed strategies for addressing their challenges and produced a "concept map" poster about their scenario and strategies. The whole group then developed a generalized list of strategies for success. Here are their list of strategies and photos of their posters; click on any photo to see a larger version.

Strategies for Success

  • Collaboration – including sharing instruments, working with local agencies
  • Expanding your research ideas – thinking outside the box
  • Find/seek the resources you need via grants, internal funding, local agencies
  • Learning about your local setting
  • What is the appropriate level for undergraduate researchers
  • Flexibility
