Workshop Timing

The main workshop program will begin on Sunday evening, October 20, 2019, at 5:00pm at Carleton College. The workshop will conclude at 2:00pm on Tuesday, October 22. If you cannot arrive on Sunday in time for the 5:00pm opening session and dinner, please plan to travel on Saturday instead, so that you can be present for the entire workshop.

Course Development Pre-Workshop Session

The program for this session will begin at approximately 12:00pm on Sunday October 20th and conclude around 4:00pm. Workshop participants who have signed up for this session should plan their travel so that they can attend the full session.

MATLAB Boot Camp Pre-Workshop Session

The program for this session will begin at approximately 2:00pm on Sunday October 20th and conclude around 4:00pm. Workshop participants who have signed up for this session should plan their travel so that they can attend the full session.

Travel

Participants are responsible for their travel to and from the workshop. Ground transportation to and from the airport will be arranged for you if you provide us with your travel information in advance. Maps and directions to Carleton College are available on the Carleton College website. Book your travel early! Flights to Minneapolis-St Paul Airport are quite affordable when booked well in advance.

Travel by Air

Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport is the closest airport to Northfield. We recommend arriving no later than 3:30pm on October 20th and departing after 4:30pm October 22nd. Travel to and from the airport takes approximately one hour.

Airport shuttles

Ground transportation to and from the airport will be arranged for you based on your arrival and departure times if you provide us with that information in advance, via the travel information form. We will provide you with estimated shuttle pick-up times.

Travel by Rail

There are Amtrak routes that serve the Minneapolis-St Paul region.

Travel by Car

Directions from Minneapolis/St. Paul to Northfield

  • I-35W South to Highway 19 East (exit 69, Northfield exit).
  • Drive east on Highway 19, 11 miles to Northfield.
  • At the first stop light (where Highway 19 merges with Highway 3), turn left.
  • Country Inn is immediately on your left.

If you are driving north to Northfield, the directions from I-35 are the same. Just watch for exit 69 from the other direction.

Accommodations

Room blocks have been held at two local hotels.

For participants arriving on Sunday:

A hotel block has been reserved at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Northfield, arriving Sunday, October 20 and departing Tuesday, October 22. Reservations must be made no later than Wednesday, September 25 (the room block will be released after this date). To make your reservations, use this booking link to receive the discounted group rate of $109 - 127 per night + tax (depending on room selected). Note: because they are holding a large number of rooms for us, if you don't use the booking link they may tell you they are full. A complimentary breakfast is served each morning.

It's about a 0.5 mile walk to the meeting space from the hotel and downtown is about 2-3 blocks from the hotel. Please let us know if you have any concerns about accommodations or mobility. If you need other arrangements, please include that information on your registration form.

For participants arriving on Saturday:

A hotel block has been reserved at the Northfield Country Inn and Suites, arriving Saturday, October 19 and departing Tuesday, October 22. Reservations must be made no later than Friday, October 4 (the room block will be released after this date). To make your reservations, call 507-645-2286 and tell them you are part of the MATLAB workshop to receive the discounted group rate of $130 for Saturday night and $95 for Sunday and Monday nights + tax. Note: because they are holding a large number of rooms for us, if you don't tell them you are with the MATLAB workshop, they will tell you they are full. A complimentary breakfast is served each morning.

Communications

Both the Fairfield Inn and Country Inn offer free wireless internet access throughout their buildings. Internet access will also be available in the workshop meeting rooms at Carleton. Cellular reception is good throughout the region.

Meals

Both the Country Inn and Fairfield Inn will serve continental breakfast each morning.

Lunches, dinners, and refreshments that are part of the official workshop program will be catered or in Carleton dining facilities. All meals will include vegetarian offerings. When you register you will have the opportunity to indicate dietary restrictions if you require special meals. The price of all meals during the official workshop program are covered. Attendees are expected to pay for their own meal for the Monday night group dinner at a local restaurant.

Northfield, MN

Northfield is a small town about 40 miles south of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Minnesota's weather in October is highly variable. Please check the weather close to the workshop to prepare for snow, rain, or sun!
