Administrative Team
Members of the Team
The Administrative Team provides comprehensive operational support for SERC and all their projects, including the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT). We manage financial and project administration, coordinate events, and oversee marketing, communications, and general office operations. Working collaboratively, we ensure the SERC office functions smoothly and effectively in service of its mission.
Financial & Project Management
Financial management of SERC falls to all SERC PIs, but it is the work of the Administrative team that keeps the money flowing through the department. We provide the support to process and analyze the financial data and work with the SERC PIs to ensure that the spending is allowable, accurate and in alignment with the funded effort as outlined in the grant, subaward or contract. We work closely with Carleton Grants Office during the proposal phase of the project and with the Carleton Business Office in the management of the project funds and all necessary paperwork.
Event Coordination & Marketing
Explore some of the signature events we organize!
ITYC Summit
A summit for TYC STEM leaders to collaborate, address challenges, and advance transformative STEM education.MATLAB Workshop
An annual STEM workshop where educators collaborate with MathWorks experts to enhance courses using MATLAB and generative AI.Early Career Geoscience Faculty Workshop
An annual workshop supporting early-career geoscience faculty in teaching, research, and navigating their first years in academia.Earth Educators' Rendezvous
A biennial conference for geoscience and sustainability educators to share teaching innovations and network.
Workshops and webinars are promoted several months in advance through a combination of internal listservs, community forums, social media, and professional networks. This ensures broad participation and engagement from the STEM education community.
A key event for the community is the ITYC (Innovations in Two-Year College) Summit, which brings together educators and NSF ITYC awardees to share expertise, explore innovations in teaching, and participate in interactive sessions. Participants have opportunities for community building, networking, and contributing to the design of the Summit sessions.
Planning for events like the Summit begins many months in advance, including site selection, hotel arrangements, website content creation, and coordination with local hosts to secure appropriate meeting spaces. Promotion is conducted through multiple channels, including professional networks, community forums, social media, and targeted outreach.
The team also manages booths for SERC and NAGT at conferences to raise visibility and engage with the broader STEM education community. Our primary presence is at AGU (American Geophysical Union) and GSA (Geological Society of America) Connects where staff highlight partner initiatives, answer questions, and connect with prospective participants and collaborators. To support these efforts, the team designs a range of promotional materials to enhance outreach and engagement.
To manage all SERC and NAGT communications, including events, workshops, webinars, and membership updates, the Administrative Team holds regular planning meetings and uses workspaces and calendars to organize tasks and schedule outreach. This system ensures that communication is well-coordinated and balanced throughout the year.
Program & Administrative Support
Program Support
The Administrative Team provides direct support to SERC programs, helping staff manage projects and initiatives. This includes assisting with travel arrangements, coordinating program logistics, and supporting staff in day-to-day program operations.
Administrative Support
The Administrative Team ensures smooth daily office operations at SERC. Their work includes monitoring the calendar of events and activities, scheduling meetings with internal and external collaborators, supervising student workers, and assisting with new staff member orientation.
NAGT Executive Office
The NAGT Executive Office is comprised of members from both the SERC Administrative and Implementation Teams, who bring together administrative expertise and programmatic oversight to advance NAGT's goals. This team plays a central role in supporting the mission and operations of the organization. The Executive Office provides direct support to the NAGT Executive Director and ensures the effective management, coordination, and implementation of all NAGT programs and activities. SERC staff support this work by assisting the NAGT Executive Committee, Regional Sections and Topical Divisions under the Director's guidance.
The Executive Office also oversees a wide range of operational and strategic functions that are essential to the organization's success. This includes managing NAGT finances, coordinating marketing and advertising efforts, overseeing communications and publications, administering the awards program, and providing support to the Executive Committee. By integrating these diverse responsibilities, the Executive Office ensures that NAGT operates efficiently, maintains high standards of service to its members, and effectively advances its mission of promoting excellence in geoscience education.
NAGT On the Cutting Edge Professional Development Program
The On the Cutting Edge Professional Development Program is a collaboration between NAGT and SERC that provides workshops, webinars, conferences, and resource collections to support geoscience educators in improving teaching and learning.
Within this collaboration, the SERC administrative team manages the day-to-day implementation of all program activities. We coordinate logistics, support program planning, maintain online resources, design promotional materials, and ensure the smooth delivery of professional development opportunities. Our work is guided by input from both NAGT and SERC leadership and aligns with the program's long-standing design philosophy and workshop model inherited from the original NSF-funded initiative.
