Guangzhou, China
Assignment
You will use GeoMapApp to create an elevation profile for Guangzhou, China and locate the lowest and highest elevation points in the city.
If you completed the tutorial, you should already have GeoMapApp installed and set up so you can skip to step 3 to begin to create the profile for Guangzhou, China. If you did not complete the tutorial, however, you will need to start with Step 1. Click here to link to the instructions and tutorial.
- The first thing you need to do is to find Guangzhou in GeoMap. We recommend you use the + and - magnification buttons to zoom at between 750 and 1250 x.
- Next, load the elevation profile data and look for three areas with elevation extremes (either the highest or lowest elevations or both). Zoom in to about 2000 to 3000 x for these areas.
- Finally, make profiles for elevation across these three areas using the Grid and Profile tools. The scale on the profiles can be tricky, so run your cursor along the profile to read the elevations.
Your finished assignment will include:
- screenshots of each of your three areas;
- an elevation profile across each area which will help you characterize the city's topography;
- a completed chart for the city summarizing the information you have collected;
- a discussion of the relationship between population density and elevation for your area and its significance to the coastal hazard risks faced by the residents (the population density observations made using Google Earth).
Note: If you have a printer, it may be more convenient for you to print off the instructions to work from; or if you have two monitors place the instructions on one monitor and the course in the other. If neither of these options are available to you, just put the instructions in one window and your course in the other and toggle back and forth.
