Inquiry...or just playing in mud

So I have always struggled with the way that inquiry was presented as nondirestional in the past. I always thought that kids spent alot of time "playing" with the experimental equipment but lacked either real data in the end or data that was that ended up perhaps streghthening their preconceptions...they often "collected" data that somehow supported their original misconceptions. In order to avoid that I found myself doing less inquiry and more cookie cutter activities that I found I could control more ( ok so maybe I have some issues). The use of data collected from scientists or in more controlled experiments than I can provide in my classroom seems more comfortable to me and something I will be able to integrate into my classes more...just as long as I can find the time to wade through the abyss of the net for the data.
