Friday 2:10pm-2:30pm SERC Building - 208
Teaching Demonstration Part of Friday

Leader

David Amidon, National Center for Science Education

Demonstration

A background of all AMS offering for K-12 teachers will be shared. Project Ice will be highlighted, and a brief overview of the content from the course will be shared, as well as specific lessons and activities.

Abstract

This program will introduce K-12 teachers to the American Meteorological Society's Education Summer Programs. David is a Certified AMS Teacher (CAT #22) and has participated in all of the programs offered.

An overview of all AMS programs will be shared, including Project Atmosphere, Project Ocean and the Datastreme online courses. All of these programs offer the chance for teachers to earn graduate level credits at a reduced rate. A special focus will be placed on the newest program, Project Ice, where teachers travel to Oregon State to get hands on experience from the COLDEX ice core program. Lessons and activities from the program will be shared, along with a review of the AMS website and application procedures for their programs.

Context

All AMS Summer Programs offer teachers a chance to learn about various online resources and get hands-on experience with the tools that real scientists use. Lessons and activities are shared, as well as specific content knowledge for the focus of each course. Lessons, activities, and resources are easily adapted to existing, weather/ climate-based curricula.

Why It Works

From the AMS website:
Project Ice is a comprehensive teacher professional development course based on studies of the Earth's climate system with emphasis on ice cores. It is directed towards improving teacher effectiveness in generating interest and understanding in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics among pre-college students.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

Gain an understanding of paleoclimatology, ice core science, and climate change with focus on Antarctica and the activities and discoveries made through the Center for Oldest Ice Exploration (COLDEX)
Help promote polar science and climate education by peer training fellow teachers in their community
Gain access to scientifically accurate and pedagogically sound instructional resource materials designed for teachers
Earn three graduate credits from Pennsylvania Western University upon completion of program requirements
