This workshop will provide faculty and graduate students interested in teaching with information and resources to improve their mentoring interactions with students, with an emphasis on students attending two-year colleges (2YC) and/or recent transfer students. Collectively, students at 2YC typically have different demographic characteristics than students found at most four-year universities. Whole Student Mentoring provides a framework to meet the students where they navigate their academic experience. As part of this workshop, we will introduce evidence-based concepts of intentionally mentoring students in STEM, include components specifically provided for mentoring students from underrepresented groups, and identify and provide teaching and learning resources regarding geoscience career pathways.

Overview

Students from 2YC are an untapped demographic of next generation geoscientists. This workshop will provide faculty with information and resources to improve their mentoring interactions with students, with an emphasis on students attending or recently transferred from two-year colleges (2YC).

The workshop will: (1) introduce the evidence-based concept of intentionally mentoring students in STEM, (2) include components specifically focused on mentoring students from groups underrepresented in geosciences, (3) identify and provide teaching and learning resources regarding geoscience career pathways.

This workshop will develop a cohort of faculty who can then work together and learn from each other. We intend to follow up with participants several months after the workshop (likely October) to check in on progress of implementation of the plans.

This workshop is part of an NSF GEOPAths project in which a main activity is developing 2YC cohorts around mentoring students into geosciences.

The primary audiences are:

  • Faculty (regular or adjunct) of two-year colleges.
  • Graduate students interested in careers at two-year institutions.

  • have familiarity with best practices in mentoring and understand Whole Student Mentoring
  • develop a mentoring plan to implement with their own students
  • explore geo-focused resources to help guide students in their pathway toward a career in geoscience
  • develop a plan for how they can incorporate geoscience resources into their teaching or mentoring.

Format

Workshop will be a combination of short presentations including guest presentations, whole group and small group discussions and activities, and work time to develop individual mentoring plans.
