ENGAGE Your Students as Critical Readers: Connecting Science News to the Classroom

Monday 1:30pm-4:00pm Tate 201-20
Afternoon Mini Workshop

Heather Goss, American Geophysical Union
Kyle Fredrick, Pennsylvania Western University - California

In 2022, Eos: Science News by AGU will launch ENGAGE (Eos News: Geoscience and Global Events) in partnership with SERC's Teach the Earth. This workshop will introduce educators to the resource, including how to explore Eos's archive of science news reporting; find associated, peer-reviewed classroom activities at Teach the Earth; and create their own classroom activities and share them. ENGAGE is designed to help educators improve science literacy and critical science news consumption in their classrooms. We will address course and curricular objectives with aligned assessment models for using news articles, appropriate to their educational setting. Non-major, 2YC, and those with Spanish-speaking or ESL classes are encouraged to attend. Laptops are encouraged since we will be navigating and inputting content into search apps and submission forms online together.

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Navigate and Explore the ENGAGE resource on Eos.org and discover topical materials relevant to their interests and teaching.
  • Evaluate model Teach the Earth activities that use news or current events to introduce content or assess student learning.
  • Collaborate with others to brainstorm ideas and consider priorities and strengths of teaching with News.
  • Use the Teach the Earth submission form and evaluation rubric to develop a teaching activity for use in their own courses that includes ENGAGE materials from Eos.org.
