Community Resources
New Resource!
ADVANCEing FieldSafety is committed to providing the tools and resources to help build a safe and welcoming field environment and team culture within the Geosciences and beyond.
Anti-Racism Resources
Continued anti-Black police violence in the U.S., racial and ethnic inequities in COVID-19 related illnesses and deaths, and the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic have lent renewed urgency to conversations and action to address systemic racism in the U.S.
(In)equity in the Time of COVID-19
As day-to-day life continues to transform as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are faced with new challenges related to equitable treatment in society. Understanding the burdens that have been disproportionately placed on certain identity groups is vital to creating and maintaining safe and inclusive educational and working spaces.
Creating Inclusive Virtual Spaces
Virtual places of learning and work bring with them new challenges to maintaining inclusive and safe classrooms and workspaces. This resource provides questions to consider and readings on important topics to keep in mind for inclusive learning and working spaces.
Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination
Every individual has the right to learning and working environments free of discrimination, harassment and bullying. This resource provides definitions of these types of misconduct as well as research on the psychological, physiological, professional, economic and societal effects of harassment.
Microaggressions
Microaggressions are a targeted form of insult and demeaning action or language directed towards a group of people based on their identity. Because they tend to be more subtle than overt discrimination, hatred, or bigotry, microaggressions have been studied as "modern" forms of racism or sexism. They are, however, not always subtle or covert.
Codes of Conduct
Codes of conduct are guidelines adopted by an organization to address expected and appropriate behaviors, and are one of the important steps an organization should take to stop harassment in scientific settings. This resource identifies necessary elements of effective codes and provides examples to develop your own.
In the Field
Field training and research experiences can be defining moments in people's careers, especially in the earth and environmental sciences. This resource identifies some of the unique challenges introduced by field work, as well as additional resources on steps to take to create a safe, inclusive experience for all.
Training
In addition to the ADVANCEGeo bystander intervention workshops, this resource provides a list of common workshops and training to address harassment, sexual violence, and prejudice.
Responding to Hostile Behaviors
Responding to hostile behaviors requires a community effort and strong leadership to send a clear message that these behaviors are not acceptable. Here you will find strategies to address incidents when they happen as well as resources for changing the culture so that toleration of these behaviors does not continue.
Creating Inclusive Climates
Addressing issues related to power dynamics, intersectionality, and privilege is critical for promote positive, productive relationships with our colleagues and students, creating a safe and respectful learning and working environments. A culture change is required in academia in order to transform our institutions into equitable and inclusive workplaces.
A Primer on Diversity
If you were to ask 20 people "What is diversity?", it is likely that you will get 20 different answers. Diversity is an evolving concept that is rarely defined in the research literature. This resource addresses how we define diversity, why it is important, and what diversity looks like in the geosciences.
Legal Context
In the United States several laws protect individuals from harassment and discrimination and ensure just practice by federally funded institutions. This resource provides overviews of these protections and ways to find more information.
Recognizing Bias
Bias is described in Webster's dictionary as "the prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair" and can be conceptualized as implicit or explicit. This resource defines types of bias and addresses bias in the sciences and geosciences.
Reporting
Here you will find resources on how to report an incident of harassment, assault or bias if you choose to do so and on how to support your colleagues who have decided to report.
Data
Sexual harassment in the workplace and academia is not new. However, more and more data is being presented to shed light on the severity of the problem. Here is a list of sources that provide data on campus climates, intersectionality and harassment, and harassment in STEM.
