NSF Choices
Choose Your Sessions for the Virtual NSF Visit
If you will be participating in the virtual
visit to NSF
, complete the following form by
May 6
. Be sure to hit the SUBMIT button before leaving this page or your information will be lost.
Important: please read!
Going to NSF is a great opportunity! To make the most of your visit, here is what we recommend:
Choose a small group session for the morning. You can only go to one.
We recommend that you meet with a program officer. See the section on individual meetings, below, for details.
In the form below, you will be asked to choose your top two choices for the concurrent sessions. If it's possible, we will schedule individual meetings around these sessions (and so should you), but if that's not possible, it's usually better (more valuable to you) to meet with a program director than to attend the concurrent sessions. It is permissible to come late or leave early in the concurrent sessions, since the program directors realize that some of you may need to keep individual appointments.
Meet with another program director, if your research does not easily fall into just one program.
In scheduling your virtual visit, these are the priorities that we will follow. We will notify you in early July of what appointments we have made for you. We do not recommend that you attempt to make appointments on your own, given that our group is large enough that we overwhelm the program officers with appointments. We do the best we can to make appointments for you based upon how you fill out this form. If you have a compelling reason for having different priorities, please let us know that in the box for additional comments or questions at the bottom of this form.

Your email address is what we use to track your application and participation in the workshop. Be sure to use the same email address in all forms relating to your workshop participation.)
On June 27 and 28, we will have optional sessions on various programs at NSF and also will schedule some individual meetings with selected program directors. Some of the small group sessions are concurrent, so we are asking you to prioritize your meeting preferences. Please let us know your program session priorities below and we will work to accommodate these, when possible, in scheduling individual meetings. If we are unable to avoid a conflict with your top choices of concurrent sessions, you will have the option of going to other concurrent sessions instead.
Tuesday Options
Monday, June 27
Concurrent Sessions I
You will have the opportunity to attend one, and only one, small disciplinary group meeting with a program director (e.g., tectonics, hydrologic sciences, and so forth). All of these sessions happen simultaneously, so it is not possible to attend more than one. Please select the program you would like to attend. If your discipline is not listed, then please select "Other" and write in your program area preference or other comments in the space provided.
Preference for small-group meeting:
Geobiology & Low-Temperature Geochemistry
Geomorphology and Land-Use Dynamics
Hydrologic Sciences
Petrology and Geochemistry
Tectonics
Geophysics
Sedimentary Geology & Paleobiology
Programs in the Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences
Programs in the Division of Ocean Sciences
None of the above (describe in text box below)
If you are not attending any of these small group meetings, you can use this time to meet with a program director from a program not listed above. Please give the name of the program that best fits your interests.
If you selected Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, please identify the program in which you are MOST likely to apply for funding:
Atmospheric Chemistry
Climate and Large-scale Dynamics
Physical and Dynamic Meteorology
Geospace Section
Other (please describe below)
If there is another Atmospheric and Geospace Science program you are likely to apply to, what is it?
If your selected Ocean Sciences, please identify the program in which you are MOST likely to apply for funding:
Biological Oceanography
Chemical Oceanography
Physical Oceanography
Marine Geology & Geophysics
Other (please describe below)
If there is another Ocean Sciences program you are likely to apply to, what is it?
Informational session on the NSF CAREER Program
Are you planning to attend this session?
Yes
No
Concurrent Sessions II
Please indicate your first choice:
Instrumentation and Facilities in Earth Sciences
Polar Programs
Frontiers in Earth Sciences
Ocean Sciences Logistics and Ship Time
Wednesday Options
Tuesday, June 28
Concurrent Sessions III
Supporting undergraduate education in the Geosciences
Data Management for NSF supported projects
Informational session on NSF Broader Impacts and Increasing Diversity in Geosciences
Are you planning to attend this session?
Yes
No
Individual Meetings
If you have an idea for a proposal, we recommend that you meet with the appropriate program director to discuss your idea and get some feedback about it. This is part of the program directors' jobs, and it is something that they generally enjoy. Your idea does not need to be fully fleshed out, but you should be able to articulate the problem or question you want to study, why it is important, and some thoughts about how you will approach it, so that you can have a meaningful and productive conversation with them.
If you wish to meet individually with one of the directors of the programs listed below, please select the program from the list. Because we anticipate that several of you will want to meet with each of these directors, we will make your appointment for you, avoiding conflicts with your other choices to the best of our abilities. We will aim to have your individual meetings scheduled by June 20 (provided that you complete this form by May 6). If we are scheduling an individual appointment for you, please wait until after that to schedule any appointments with additional program directors.
If you want to meet with a program officer from outside the Geosciences directorate, then you will need to make your own appointments. Read the
NSF website
to identify the appropriate programs and find the contact information for those directors. We
strongly
recommend that you make those appointments for dates after June 28.
If you are interested in discussing the CAREER program and would submit your proposal to a program in the Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS) or Earth Sciences (EAR) division, you would meet with the relevant disciplinary program director. If you would submit your proposal to the Ocean Sciences Division (OCE), you would meet with the relevant disciplinary program director and with someone in the Ocean education program.
If you would like to meet with a director from one of the programs listed below, please select the program from the list.
If you do not make a selection from the list below, we will assume that you do not want to schedule an individual meeting with anyone from these programs.
Select one (optional!):
Atmospheric Sciences
Chemical Oceanography
Climate and Large-Scale Dynamics
Geobiology and Low-Temperature Geochemistry

Petrology and Geochemistry
Physical and Dynamic Meteorology
Sedimentary Geology and Paleobiology
Tectonics
If you would like to meet with a director from another one of the programs listed below, please select the program from the list.
Select another one (still optional!):
Atmospheric Chemistry
Chemical Oceanography
Climate and Large-Scale Dynamics
Geobiology and Low-Temperature Geochemistry
