Information for Participants

Getting to Colorado School of Mines

Colorado School of Mines is located in Golden, just west of Denver. Here are links to general directions to campus plus a campus map (Acrobat (PDF) 882kB May24 14).

If you are flying in to Denver International Airport:

  • The Super Shuttle offers service to Golden, and you can book in advance to avoid a wait.
  • The most cost effective way to travel from DIA to CSM is to arrange to share rides with other Forum participants. You have already received an email from one of our logistics folks, Wes Buchanan, requesting information. Please email him your arrival airline, flight number, and arrival time, plus whether you intend to rent a car. He will compile a spreadsheet so that you can arrange carpools with one another.

If you are driving to campus, you can park in any of the blue or yellow lots on the parking map (Acrobat (PDF) 882kB May24 14). The closest lot to Forum activities is E-lot. Pay attention to signs to make sure that you don't part in a restricted space. Parking is free on the weekends. During the week, parking is $4/day if you pay at the lot, or $2/day if you buy a parking pass. If you want a parking pass, please email Ben Frieman ahead of time.

Check-in

If you are staying in the dorm, you will be housed in Maple Hall (street address 1733 Maple Street, Golden, CO 80401 and #38 on the campus map (Acrobat (PDF) 882kB May24 14)). Check-in is between 5 pm and 11 pm in Maple Hall. If you arrive after 11 pm, please contact the person on call (number posted on the Maple Hall door). If you arrive before 5 pm on Sunday, you may store your belongings in one of the workshop rooms in Berthoud Hall (#7 on the campus map (Acrobat (PDF) 882kB May24 14)) until check-in at 5:00. Please drop off luggage only during a workshop activity session or break, rather than interrupting a lecture. On Friday and Saturday, there is no storage option.

When you check in, you will receive a meal card and/or parking pass if you purchased either.

If you are not staying in the dorm, we will have your Forum packet and name tag at the first event you are registered for (field trip, workshop, or Forum opener).

Field trip departures

All field trips will depart from the D parking lot (Acrobat (PDF) 882kB May24 14). With the exception of the Homestake Field Trip (which will depart at 7:45), all field trips will depart promptly at 8:00 am, so please arrive earlier than the departure time. Please see the Forum information page for more information on what to bring. Remember that you must have pre-registered for a field trip in order to participate. If you have not already checked in for the Forum, the field trip leaders will have your Forum packet and name tag at the field trip departure site.

Workshop program and locations

All workshops will be held in Berthoud Hall (#7 on the campus map (Acrobat (PDF) 882kB May24 14)). The two half day workshops on Sunday (Google Earth and Visible Geology) will be held in Berthoud Hall 222. All other workshops will be held in Berthoud Hall 201. Remember that you must have pre-registered for a workshop in order to participate. If you have not already checked in for the Forum, your workshop leader will have your Forum packet and name tag at the workshop venue. You can view the workshop program online or download a pdf of the Forum Abstracts with Program (Acrobat (PDF) 1.7MB Jun10 14).

Meals

If you purchased a meal card, you will eat in the Slate Café in the Student Center (#19 on the campus map (Acrobat (PDF) 882kB May24 14)). Breakfast is from 7-8 am; lunch is from 12-1 pm; dinner is from 6:00-7:00 pm.

Poster and oral presentations

All Forum sessions will be held in Berthoud Hall (#7 on the campus map (Acrobat (PDF) 882kB May24 14)).

Posters

The maximum poster size is 48" wide x 36" tall. Posters will be displayed in Berthoud Hall 243 and will be up for the duration of the Forum. You can put your poster up in your assigned spot whenever you arrive. We also hope that you will upload a pdf of your poster so that we can link it to the Forum Program page. If you choose to upload your poster, please optimize the file before uploading if it is more than 20 Mb in size.

During the Forum, you will have 2 minutes to give a teaser preview of your poster. You MUST limit your preview to 2 minutes, with a maximum of 2 PowerPoint slides. You may upload your two PowerPoint slides any time before or during the Forum, but please be sure that they are uploaded by the end of the morning or afternoon prior to your session.

Oral presentations

Please adhere to the time limits set by the session conveners for your session so that there is time for questions and so that no one is short-changed in terms of presentation time. You may upload your presentation any time before or during the Forum, but please be sure that your presentation is uploaded by the end of the morning or afternoon prior to your session.
