Travel and Logistics Information

The workshop will begin at 5:30 pm on Thursday evening, July 29, 2010 with optional workshop events during the mid-afternoon on Thursday. The workshop will end after dinner on Saturday, July 31, 2010 with optional sessions on Sunday morning. Before making travel plans, please read about the options below for ground transportation to Stanford. Please recognize that it may take an hour to get to Palo Alto and you may have to wait a while for some modes of public transportation. We strongly recommended that you do not schedule plane flights to arrive in San Francisco or San Jose any later than 3:15 p.m. in order to allow enough time for travel from the airport to campus.

Transportation
Participants are responsible for their transportation to and from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. The two major airports serving Palo Alto are San Francisco International Airport, SFO and Mineta San Jose Airport, SJC. Train and bus service is also available. An excellent source of specific information about ground transportation to Stanford and directions to the Stanford campus is the Stanford Summer Conference Services site. Some of the shuttles are considerably cheaper for the second person going to the same location. Also, sharing a taxi might be an inexpensive option if several share the ride. We will provide information about other participants arriving at the same airport after travel information has been submitted so you can contact each other to share rides. Those driving themselves as well as those taking ground transportation should consult these maps and directions to Stanford University.

We encourage you to print out a campus map and bring it with you to the workshop.

Check-in and Lodging
Check-in is from 1:00-4:30 p.m. at Studio 1, 736 Escondido Road, in Escondido Village (EV). Studio 1 is next to the Graduate Community Center (between the Graduate Community Center and Mirrilees). Registration will reopen at 5:00 pm at Branner Dining Hall. Participants will sign in, pick up workshop materials, and submit the completed Medical Emergency Health Form (Acrobat (PDF) 5kB Jan13 04) in a sealed envelope. If you arrive after the evening program, please call the Conference Front Desk (650-736-9982 between 8:00 am - 10:00 pm and 650-736-9994 after-hours). Any check ins for lodging outside of the times listed above (e.g, leaders on Wednesday, arrivals after evening session on Thursday) should be done at the Summer Conference Office at Wilbur (658 Escondido Road). This is very close to the Studios. More information can be found on the Welcome Information Sheet.

If you are running tight on time and plan to attend an optional Thursday afternoon session, you can go directly to that session in the Mitchell Building (with your luggage in tow).

Participants will be housed in the Studio 1 and Studio 2 residence halls located near the corner of Campus Drive East and Escondido Road. Accommodations are single-occupancy dorm rooms with private bathroom facilities and kitchenette (unstocked). Towels and linens are provided. Shampoo and soap are not provided. Bring an alarm clock or cell phone with alarm as the dorm rooms don't have alarm clocks. Check-out on Sunday will be done in front of Studio 1 between 8:00 am and 10:00 am. Those needing to check out before 8:00 am should make alternative arrangements the day before with the summer conference office in Wilbur. Later check out between 10:00 and 2:00 will also be done at the Wilbur summer conference office.

Please note: the evening program on Thursday is in Branner Dining Hall. Entrance to the dining hall is from the back side of the dorm. The front doors to the dorm will be locked.

Parking
Daily "Scratcher" permits are $4.50 per day and can be purchased at the time of check-in. They must be hung from the rear view mirror, facing out. Daily conference scratchers are valid only in areas designated for "Residence" parking and only on the date specified on the permit. We understand that the Wilbur parking lot is a dual-designated lot (C designation) where you can park for free on Saturday and Sunday. Please read and follow the parking guidelines as you are responsible for parking tickets ($45).

Meals
Most meals will be buffet-style in the campus dining facilities. There will be vegetarian options at all meals.

Communications
The dorm rooms have active, local-only telephone lines. A telephone card is required for long distance calls from those, or other, campus phones. If you have a cell phone, you should plan to bring it. Nearly all of the Stanford buildings have wireless Internet access. A guest account will be created for each participant giving access to the Internet in the conference rooms and in other academic buildings on campus. Conference participants will be provided with a user name and password upon arrival on campus. Unfortunately, the guest account will not work in the living areas. However, internet access in the residence halls can be purchased through Stanford's Residential Computing office for $30.00 per week (no daily fee structure), either wireless or via an ethernet network cable - please bring your own (you may need a network cable to set up the wireless account). The Stanford libraries also have a few public use computers that do not require a Stanford username or password. They can be used short-term for checking email, etc.

What to Wear
Dress for the workshop is casual. Areas close to the water can be cool in the summer in the Bay area. Palo Alto has mild, average temperatures that range from 39 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The average high in the summer is 77 and the low is 54. The evenings are cool.
