This Open Education Resource (OER) fills a gap in instructional resources available on scientific ocean drilling and its contributions to our knowledge of ocean science and overall Earth systems. This ten-chapter, ~90,000-word OER has been designed for an introductory-level, non-STEM student audience. Published through the online platform Pressbooks, the OER incorporates existing International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) multimedia (>90 video clips) and developed new interactive H5P materials aligned with best pedagogical practices. The design of the OER addresses accessibility for assistive technologies and inclusion of science identities (>30 profiles) for a full spectrum of learners.
The OER chapters cover Earth systems, the history of scientific ocean drilling, drilling vessels and platforms, ship operations, drilling logistics, shipboard laboratories, core curation, highlights of prior expeditions and ship activities, ending with a list of print and online resources for further exploration. Each chapter concludes with exercises for students to complete scaled across Bloom's Taxonomy.
