How to Develop a Lab or Field Code of Conduct

From: Unlearning Racism In the Geosciences

This resource supports developing a code of conduct and process for reporting violations in your lab, university, and organization. It should be helpful to geoscience programs that are leading field trips and that are supporting students in research experiences.

  1. Read background material on building an antiracist laboratory, promoting inclusion in field experiences, and overcoming barriers to field work as a rite of passage.
  2. Use this action planning resource to help you create a code of conduct and student safety plan.
  3. See examples of safety plans and code of conducts submitted by geoscience groups participating in URGE. These are primarily from departments but include organizational and field examples.

See the URGE (Unlearning Racism in Geoscience) website for a full set of antiracism program planning resources.
