Gallery Walk Questions about the Biosphere

This material was originally created for Starting Point:Introductory Geology
and is replicated here as part of the SERC Pedagogic Service.

created by Mark Francek, Central Michigan University

The following are potential questions that could be used in a gallery walk activity about the biosphere. The questions are organized according to the cognitive level at which students are engaged, using Bloom's Taxonomy.

Knowledge

Describe the unique adaptations life must make in the following environments? In the second column of the chart, list where these environments might exist in the solar system.

Deep sea vents
Antarctic dry valleys
Caves
Hypersaline environments
Thermal hot springs
Deep Earth Habitats

Comprehension

Describe how vegetation patterns are impacted by a) climate b) topography c) soil d) humans e) geology f) time

Application

Analysis

Contrast how nutrients are cycled in the following ecosystems:

a) arid and semiarid
b) coastal, marine, and freshwater
c) forest
d) mountain
e) agricultural

Synthesis

Evaluation

Judge how increasing urban land at the expense of forests and grasslands would impact the a) atmosphere, b) biosphere, c) hydrosphere, and d) lithosphere.
