IRB (Institutional Review Board)

The Human Subjects review for The Math Your Earth Science Majors Need project was done by Highline College's Institutional Review Board (IRB). The other lead institutions for the project (EarthScope, Carleton College) have accepted Highline's responsibility for this and not done any further review themselves.

Different institutions have different requirements related to IRB. Some institutions readily accept another institution's assessment but others wish to do an assessment themselves.

If you have any questions about what your institution's preference is, you should contact your IRB now (or at least by 1 month after the development workshop) and check how they would like to handle it.

  • Email text you could start with when you contact your institution's IRB
  • You can show your institution this approval letter from Highline's IRB - Highline IRB Approval Letter TMYN-Majors (Acrobat (PDF) 53kB Jun7 23)
  • Some institutions may also ask for the Highline IRB original application - coming early July (when Eric is off PTO)
  • Some institutions may also ask for the exact text of the surveys and quizzes the student will be given.
    • Math questions - these would be the questions you plan to use in WAMAP related to student math knowledge.
    • Student attitudinal survey - coming soon (August 1 at the latest)
  • Some institutions may ask for Highline's IRB information

Student Consent - if your institution requires that students give implied or signed consent you can use one of these templates.
