For the Instructor
These student materials complement the Coastal Processes, Hazards and Society Instructor Materials. If you would like your students to have access to the student materials, we suggest you either point them at the Student Version which omits the framing pages with information designed for faculty (and this box). Shenzhen, China
You will enter the information from this assignment on the Worksheet that you downloaded from the main Case Study page.
Assignment
You will use GeoMapApp to create an elevation profile for Shenzhen, China and locate the lowest and highest elevation points in the city.
The first thing you need to do is to find Shenzhen in GeoMap. We recommend you use the + and - magnification buttons to zoom at between 750 and 1250 x.Next,load the elevation profile data and look for three areas with elevation extremes (either the highest or lowest elevations or both). Zoom in to about 2000 to 3000 x for these areas.
Finally,make profiles for elevation across these three areas using the Grid and Profile tools. The scale on the profiles can be tricky, so run your cursor along the profile to read the elevations.
Your finished assignment will include:
- screenshots of each step for the city;
- an elevation profile for at least three locations in the city to provide a characterization of each city's topography;
- a completed chart for the city, summarizing the information you have collected;
- a discussion of the relationship between population density and elevation for your area and its significance to the coastal hazard risks faced by the residents (population density observations made using Google Earth).
