In the case of Hurricane Katrina, although there are a series of off shore barrier islands, the shallow nature of the enclosed bay north of the Mississippi Delta (i.e., Mississippi Sound), combined with the fact that the strongest winds in the storm occurred in the northeastern quadrant of the storm, led to development Chandelieur Islands. In many case studies, significant damage is often centered near the center of the storm and near landfall locations.
However, what about storm impacts at some distance or far afield from the center of a given storm? In the next case study, we will explore some of the impacts associated with Hurricanes Irene and Sandy as they impacted the shoreline of the Eastern Shore of Virginia on the Delmarva Peninsula.
