Part A: Hop on Board the JOIDES Resolution

The JOIDES Resolution (JR) is one of the premier science research vessels in the world. Unlike other ocean-going ships, it is outfitted with a huge derrick 62 meters (~190 feet) tall, to support its core-drilling function. What is it like to work and live on a ship for two months?


The JOIDES Resolution has a variety of tools on board that make deep-sea drilling possible. Watch the following video to learn about some of the tools and laboratory facilities on board. Pause the video as you watch to answer the Stop and Think questions below. Be sure to note some interesting facts about each part of the ship as you watch the video.
