Earthquakes

This post was edited by Kit Pavlekovsky on Jul, 2012
Hello all.

I plan on using the EET chapter on earthquakes. I'd like the kids to plot a series of quakes onto a world map and then lead a discussion about their observations and hypotheses. I'll also have them plot deadly quakes and discuss why certain areas appear more susceptible than others. I'd also like to add a case study that would highlight the 2004 Tsunami or the October 2005 quake that struck Pakistan.

I found a couple of good websites that have some quality satellite images and maps. I don't know how to link the pages, so you'll need to typ in the addresses.....SORRY! The Tsunami site is http://www.grid.unep.ch/activities/assessment/indianocean_crisis/maps.php THIS IS A FANTASTIC SITE CHECK OUT THE STUFF IN THE ACTIVITY BOX!!

The Pakistan site is disasterscharter.org/disasters/CALLID_110_e.html

On of the things I'd love to do is find topo maps of Banda Aceh or the Balakut region of Pakistan. Any suggestions?

Hi Brendan,
By putting the URl here, a link is automatically created. If you click on the URls you included, you'll see that they open up in new windows.
Thanks,---Carla

Hi Brendan!

You were right on with the Tsunami site! I wish I taught Earth Science. The Pakistan site would not open for me at 7pm in the evening. I will try earlier in the day.

I did a Google Search for "Topo Banda Aceh" and found several possible links. You might want to try that.

See you on the 14th.

Hey Brendan - Both sites seem excellent. Lots of info, great images and data a-plenty. (I was able to get to the Pakistan site with no problems). I am curious to see how you will "plot" the data - what software are you going to use? This is a topic I cover in my classroom so I would like to "borrow" ideas from any successes you have.

Thanks,
Sean
