Teaching with InTeGrate Materials in a 2YC Environment

Thursday, Friday 8:30am-11:30am HALE 240
Workshop

Conveners

David Douglass, Pasadena City College

Focusing on InTeGrate's goal of increasing geoscience literacy for all undergraduate students, participants in this session will develop plans for fostering adoption of InTeGrate materials. Specifically designed to address the challenges of instruction in two year colleges, we will discuss the specific concerns and unique problems faced by participants. These may include issues such as: adapting and using the materials in a diverse classroom, making use of the student learning outcomes and assessments, overcoming articulation issues, develop administration buy-in, and build interest among colleagues including adjunct faculty.

Overview

InTeGrate classroom modules align with high-impact practices that enhance earth literacy among college students. Two-year college faculty and instructors who want to adopt new materials into their courses are often concerned about the lack of sufficient time. This includes time for them to learn the new materials and class time where they will "fit" new activities into their current course syllabi. This workshop offers a dedicated opportunity to do just that: learn about InTeGrate materials and work to redesign your current course syllabi. The workshop will include presentations, small-group work time, and active discussions during which participants can share their own experiences addressing topics such as moving beyond one instructor's classroom (colleague and adjunct buy-in) and obstacles related to making program-level changes at two year colleges (articulation issues and college approval).

Workshop Goals

The goals of this workshop are to:

  • facilitate the incorporation of InTeGrate modules into introductory courses taught by two-year college faculty and instructors
  • identify and discuss the challenges associated with incorporating new classroom materials in two-year college classrooms
  • explore strategies for maintaining articulation and achieving administrative buy-in for proposed course changes

Target Audience

This workshop is most appropriate for two-year college faculty and instructors who teach introductory level STEM courses and who want to incorporate InTeGrate modules into their own courses. We also welcome department and program administrators from two-year colleges in charge of curriculum decisions.
