Instrument Type

MASS SPECTROMETERS - Radiogenic Isotopes

Micromass Isoprobe & New Wave DUV 193 Excimer laser

Age determination U-Pb

Typical Use:

Crystallization age of detrital zircons
Crystallization age of zircon in igneous rocks
Cooling ages of sphene and apatite
Crystallization age of diagenetic xenotime in sed rocks
Crystallization age of monazite inclusions in garnet

Conditions for Use:

Submitted samples will be analyzed on a contract basis (i.e. lab personnel will do the work). Visitors are invited to work in the lab to work with lab personnel.

User Fees:

per U-Th-Pb age determination (a single laser spot) for typical applications in collaborative research.
~0 for extraction of minerals from rock samples.

Instrument Priorities:

Remote Use:

Yes, can be operated with PC Anywhere with a fast connection.

Sample Preparation:

Each application is different – contact us for more info.

Standard Collections/Lab Blanks:

We have calibrated U-Th-Pb mineral standards for zircon, sphene, apatite, xenotime and monazite.

Data reduction is done with in-house software running in Excel, combined with Isoplot.

Educational Use:

Class demonstrations are available for K-12.
Undergraduate student research projects are invited.
Graduate student research projects are invited.

Support provided by:
