The workshop will officially begin with a program Sunday evening, June 6, 2010 at 7:00pm. We will gather informally for a cash-bar reception at 5:30pm and dinner at 6:00pm in Chesapeake A of the Sadler Center. If you cannot arrive on Sunday in time for the 7:00 session, please indicate that on your travel information form and we will arrange for housing for you on Saturday night. The workshop will end after dinner on Thursday evening, June 10.
Optional NSF Trip
We are offering an optional one-day trip to the National Science Foundation on Friday, June 11. A bus will be provided to drive participants to NSF early in the morning and will return to Williamsburg at the end of the day. The morning will include an orientation session followed by small group meetings with program officers. In the afternoon, NSF staff will offer group sessions on some specific NSF programs and you will be able meet individually with NSF program officers. We will walk to a nearby restaurant for dinner before the bus returns to Williamsburg. This NSF trip is optional, but we encourage everyone, including faculty from two-year colleges, to attend.
You have the option of returning to Williamsburg on the bus and staying in your hotel room on Friday night or you may choose to make arrangements to leave from the Washington area at the end of the day on Friday June 11 or the following morning (making your own arrangements for housing on Friday night in the DC area). Please note the various options under Transportation from NSF to the Washington DC Airports.
Participants are responsible for their travel to and from the workshop.
Transportation to Williamsburg by Air
Three airports serve the Williamsburg area: Richmond, Newport News, and Norfolk. It is easier to travel to Williamsburg from Richmond or Newport News than from Norfolk, so unless the schedule or fares are significantly better in Norfolk, we encourage you to arrive in Richmond or Newport News. The Richmond airport is approximately 50 minutes by car from Williamsburg, the Newport News Patrick Henry Airport is about 20 minutes by car, and the Norfolk airport is one hour (or more depending on tunnel traffic).
Although you are responsible for your transportation to and from the airport, once we have travel information for all participants we will provide a list of arrival times so participants arriving at the same airport can coordinate transportation to Williamsburg if they wish.
Richmond International Airport Ground Transportation:
Groome Transportation (1-800-552-7911) leaves the airport every hour on the hour. The cost for one person is $44 one-way and $78 round-trip; if two or more passengers ride together the one-way cost is $27.50 per person. The Groome service desk is to the right once you exit the escalator by Carousel 1 in Baggage Claim. Arrangements for the return trip to the airport can be made when you arrive in Richmond. Groome may take longer than 50 minutes to reach Williamsburg if they need to drop passengers off along the way.
Tidewater Coach (757-218-9539) costs $75 for single passengers, $50 each for 2-3 passengers, and $40 each for 4-7 passengers. Tidewater Coach requires reservations be made at least a day in advance but more notice is better. You can call for reservations or click on the link above to make your reservation online. They will track your flight and leave you a voicemail with final pickup information. Once you retrieve your bags you can go out the exit at Carousel #5, cross the driveway to the Passenger Pickup Island and look for a vehicle marked Tidewater Coach.
Taxicabs, if shared, may also be a reasonably priced alternative as they are approximately $120 - $150 one-way.
Newport News Patrick Henry Airport Ground Transportation:
Tidewater Coach (757-218-9539) costs $35 for single passengers, $25 each for 2-3 passengers, and $20 each for 4-7 passengers. Tidewater Coach requires reservations be made at least a day in advance but more notice is better. You can call for reservations or click on the link above to make your reservation online. They will track your flight and leave you a voicemail with final pickup information. Once you retrieve your bags you can go out the exit just past National Rental Car in the baggage claim area and look for a vehicle marked Tidewater Coach.
Taxicabs, if shared, may also be a reasonably priced alternative as they are approximately $40 one-way.
Norfolk International Airport Ground Transportation:
Tidewater Coach (757-218-9539) costs $75 for single passengers, $50 each for 2-3 passengers, and $40 each for 4-7 passengers. Tidewater Coach requires reservations be made at least a day in advance but more notice is better. You can call for reservations or click on the link above to make your reservation online. They will track your flight and leave you a voicemail with final pickup information. Once you retrieve your bags you can go out door #1 of baggage claim, across the driveway and onto the Passenger Pickup Island and look for a vehicle marked Tidewater Coach.
Taxicabs, if shared, may also be a reasonably priced alternative as they are approximately $100 one-way.
Transportation from NSF to the Washington DC Airports:
If you attend the NSF trip, you may choose to leave from a Washington DC airport on the evening of June 11 (or later) or from an airport around Williamsburg anytime during the day on Saturday, June 12. You will be on your own for food expenses after dinner on June 11. If you do not plan to go to NSF, you can make plans to leave on Friday, June 11. Previous participants have found the NSF trip very useful, so we encourage you to attend.
Some participants choose to fly out of one of the three Washington DC airports late in the day after the NSF visit or to stay overnight in DC at their own expense and leave the following morning. In some cases, the fares are reasonable even though the arrival and departure airports are different.
Travel time from the NSF offices to BWI or Dulles is at least one hour (and may be more during rush hour); to Reagan National you should allow at least one-half hour if during rush hour. The Washington DC Airport Shuttle serves all three metropolitan Washington airports. They will pick up at the door and deliver to the airport.
